reassess.
Application filed March 20, 1916.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. GIBERsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toms River, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining- Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chairs, and more particularly to reclining chairs in which means operable by the occupant of the chair are provided for simultaneously shifting the back, foot or leg rest and arms.
The object of the invention is to provide such a chair in which the means for shifting the back, leg rest and arms may be operated by the person seated in the chair by merely operating a lever while seated.
The invention consists in a reclining chair having a bed frame, a pivoted back and a pivoted leg rest, and a train of gears mounted in the bed frame and connecting the back and leg rest, motion being imparted to said train of gears by means of a hand lever, and arms pivotallv mounted upon the bed frame and so connected with the pivoted back as to be raised, lowered and moved longitudinally as the back is raised and lowered.
In the accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the parts of the chair in reclining position.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of part of the bed frame showing the manner of pivoting the back and leg rest thereto.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the chair with the seat cover removed to show the operating mechanism.
Fi 6 is aside elevation showing the chair mounted upon a revoluble platform.
1 is the bed frame provided with front legs 2 and back legs 3. Within this frame 1 are supported a pair of bearing pieces 4 and 5, between which are mounted the gears 6, 7 and 8 and the sectors 9 and 10 on shafts 11, 12, 13, 14: and 15, respectively, the bearings in the frame members of which are suitably bushed to provide for renewal in case of wear. The shafts 12 and 13 terminate adjacent the outer sides of the bearing Specification of Letters Patent.

pieces 4 and 5. The shafts 14 and 15 are extended throtwh the sides of the frame 1 and on the extended ends of shaft 1d are mounted thetwo side rails 16 and 17 of the back which are provided with bosses having set-screws 18 to hold them in proper Any suitable means may be extended out through one side, and in the inh stance shown the right hand side of the frame 1 and is provided with a hand lever 21 having a suitable pawl 22 adapted to 00- act with a ratchet sector 23 preferably mounted upon the bed frame.
The legs 2 and 3 have pivoted upon their upper ends extensions 2 1 and 25, respectively, to which in turn are pivotally connected the arms 26 and 27 of the chair. The extensions 25 are provided with links 28 by which they are connected with the side rails 16 and 17 of the back, so that as the back is raised and lowered the arms will be correspondingly raised and lowered in order to position them properly with relation to the degree of inclination of the back and leg rest.
It will be obvious that upon movement of the lever 21 toward the rear the motion will be transmitted from gear 6 through the idler gears 7 and 8 to the sectors 9 and 10, respectively, which in turn move the shafts 14 and 15, respectively, to lower the back and raise the leg rest. The back and leg rest may be held at the inclination desired by the user by the engagement of the pawl 22 with the notches of the ratchet 23.
In order to prevent the back from being lowered too far, I have provided its side pieces at their lower ends with fiat faces 29 which, when the back is lowered to the limit of its movement, abut against stops 30 mounted upon the frame 1, thus taking the strain off of the lever 21.
Although .I have shown the gears 6, 7 and 8 as mutilated, it is obvious that they may be completely toothed around their circumferences and complete pinions may be used in place of the sectors 9 and 10.
I have shown in Fig. 6 the chair mounted upon a platform 31 having a central pivot stepped in a base 33 provided with a set of rollers 3% upon which the chair and platform run when it is revolved on its pivot.
The bed frai is may be provided With cover 35, which may be upholstered, as may also the back, or both may be provided with cushions such as ordinarily used in Morris chairs, if desired.
Various changes in details of construction and arrangement of parts are permissible Within the meaning of the appended claims, and 1 do not Wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the details shown.
Claims:
1. A reclining chair, having a bed frame, a leg rest and a back pivoted to the front and rear of said bed frame, respectively, gear fixed to said leg rest and back, a train of gears mounted in said bed frame and interposed between and connecting the leg rest and back, and means operable by the occupant of the chair for rotating said gears to raise and lower said leg rest and back.
2. A chair, having a bed frame mounted a on le s, a back, a shaft joarnaled in said .-I' an? Eagles Ga unis patent ,ssmse rigidly mounted, a leg rest at the oppc-sia end of said bed frame, a second shaft journaled in said bed frame and upon which said leg rest is rigidly mounted, sectors on said shafts, gears meshing With said sectors and With each other, means operable by the occupant of the chair to move said gears whereby when one of said gears is oscillated its motion will be transmitted through the other gears to lower the back and raise the leg rest, or vice versa, as specified.
3. A chair having a bed frame and supporting legs, transverse shafts at back and front of said bed frame, a back and a sector mounted upon the back shaft, a leg rest and a sector mounted upon the front shaft, a train of ears connectin the sector of the front shaft with the sector of the back shaft, and a lever and pawl and ratchet mechanism operable by an occupant of the chair for operating said train of gears to raise and lower said back and leg rest and to fix them at any desired inclination.
in testimony whereof l aiiix my signature.
