Specification of Letters Patent.
.- PatentedDec.'10,'19 18t Application filed Augn'stSO, 19 16, Serial No. 117,711, Renewed {lane 5, 1918. Serial No, 23,39:4;. H
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, MAE ROBINSON RUDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county-of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of, which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to .folding tables, and is adapted particularly for use With automobiles or like. a
The prnnary ob ect of the invention is to provide a simple and improved table which shall be of light weight, simple construction, which is capable of being folded when not in use to occupy but a small amount of space within or upon the vehicle, which affords a convenient storingvplace for dishes, knives,
i'orks, cups. thermos bottle, luncheon, and
other essential accessories, and whichshall aiforda maximum in v,amount of table surface when set up or extended.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of-this character whichmay be manufactured at comparatively low cost,
which shall present a neat and attractive apperance, which shall be constructed in such manner as to' occupy-out little space but which shall possess sufficient stability or rigidity when set up to adapt itself to its various uses, and which is capable of being readily and quickly extended or folded as required.
The invention has for a still further and particular object to provide a device of this character which is equipped-with improved means for locking the legs or supports in proper position when the device is in use.
With these objects in'vicw, together with others which will appear as the description.
proceeds theinvcntion resides in the novel forn'iation, combination and arrangement of.
parts, all as will he described more fully hereinafter, illustrated .1n the draw ngs, and
particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will behest understood with reference to the accompanying drawings,
wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the improved table inset-up position and ready for use, i
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the table collapsed, l
set-up position, and i material, u The. extremities of i 1 trons which-are .-lnnged together Fig. 3" is a detail perspective view. of the I under surface of the table'when in-partly Figa Lisa similar view of the luncheonkit' 'adapted to be accommodated by f-the improved table.- v :j. I];
Referring now more particularly to,'th e drawings, the table illustrated :is'composed of a' pair of sections or leaves 5 and ,6 th'e'lsaid sections being hinged together'as at .7 so as to be capable of foldingnpon' eaclr'oth'er to occupy but a small amount of'space when not in use. The widthand lengthofthe leaves or sections may be varied, it being ob'vious that the sections may be made on such'sc'ale' as Wlll permit of the table"beingset?v up within a vehicle, or it may{henna larger scale to he used uponthe outs carriage. The table may ,be ,cons't-r wood, light sheetmetal or ranyiotl re sh dered as at"8, the said shoulde adapted to -enga'ge. and cooperate, withseach other when in set-up position toIin'aintain a smooth cven and unobstructed top s lrface for the t'a'ble. The arrangementialsp 'er- .nnts ofihe underfaces of thetablegsee'tions lying .m engagement w th ea'ch "other,
whereby the devicesmaybeneatly-and,compactly folded without presenting any obstructions. Eachof the sectionsoisiprovided throughout its pernneter with a depending apron or flange and fillers are arranged upon the bottom of the sectionsadjacent the edges thereof; The fillers. are cut #away as illustrated to provide' cliannels 10 .adjacentltheir outermostedges, and hinged asiat lliavitliin the transversely extendingchannelsfat thefrce ends' of thetahle sections are leg frames f or supporting members 12. ..'-1f he-;legs}of the supporting members are indicated. 3111-13,-
and are of aulength and width tosnugly fit the table sections and to lie withing the-confines of the longitudinally extending channels 10 in the saidvfillers; The cross bars '14, connecting the -f1'ee;ends of the'l'legs. 1-3 -rest within the laterallyn extending" channels at: 1
the inner extremities of. the table sections.
- In this manner it-is seen that the leg frames may be swunginwardly upon the table sections to lie wholly within the channels exadapted torextend into -the longitudinally he j bers'lti on the brac s 15-flgain5t-inward lengthwise of. the, longitudinal filler members of-the table sections A plate 18 partially "closes each slot so, as to prevent the block-members becoming disengaged therefrom. A-locking each ofrthe leg names for maintaining the vsame rigidly in proper extended or right angularposition. These levers are arranged 20 one upon each outer or free extremities thereof, andmay be"mounted for lateral, sliding movement within -'suitable guide openings formed with- I i in the outermost transverse filler membei's. The locking-ends of the sad levers are x l dis'pos'ed channels or slotsl7 in the longituffli'n llyie xtending filler members whereby, "said levers engage and retain the block liding mo'vement within their-slots; The; gleversat their locking ends are notched as ,[Et 20 for engagement-with the corners of J' the longitudinal fillers, whereby' accidental gfifdisplacement of the said levers will be pre- Ejverited. These levers have their inner ex- 1tfemities turned inwardly as at 21 and exitend through suitable apertures in the fillers,
j-fwhereby the saldlevers may be conveniently 4,0 operated whet; setting, or collapsing the f'table. 1 The fillers arerarranged upon the table section bottoms in such manner asto provide central rectangular compartments 22,
:15 the said compartmentsbeing adapted when the table is collapsed to house between them aluncheon kit indicatedgenerally at 23.
This kit in. the present instance is illustrated "as comprising 4 a rectangular shallow box,
formed of metal for :the like and which is provided upon its iiiterior with suitable subdivisions for properly housing dishes, knives and forks,- cups and other SUChf'aIt QIGSHS may be essential." Itwillalso'ibe observed that ample provisioii is made for packing food in the receptacles.indicatedfiat; 30, 31 and 32, thelat'ter being snugly fitte' the dish and utensil compartment?? he box is equipped with a lid 24, and the said box isof-a depth equal substantially totwice that of the compartments 22. The arrangement is such that'when the box 23 is inserted .withinbne'oithelcompartments upon the at their opposite ends with blocks 16 which lever 19 isassoc1ated with of the table sections at the round table bottom, the opposite table section maybe folded upon and snugly engaged over the protruding portion of the box.
j 'The transversely extending filler member at the outer extremity of one of the table sections may be cut away as shown, the cut awayportions provide compartments, one
for the housing of a thermos bottle or other container and theother compartment.
20 beingadapted to contain such culinary implements as may be required for a meal.
The -ends of the table sections may be equipped with handles 27 by means of which the device maybe readily carried from place 7 *rom this description it is seen .I have provided an extremely simple, inexpensive and yet thoroughly convenient collapsible table'capable of accomplishing the ends set forth. position, the leavesor sections 5 and 6 are swung outwardly until limited against further. movement by engagement of the shoulders 8. The leg frames 12 are then rocked to right angular position, whereupon the locking levers 19 are manipulated to prevent folding ofthe said leg frames. The luncheon kit may be easily removed from the com- ..partxnents'22. V
, W'hile the above is "a description of the preferred embodiment of the 1nvent1on,'it is obvious that various changes in minor details of, construction and arrangement of parts may beiresorted to if desired without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the'claimsl What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a table including a leaf havin a laterally disposed channel inits under ace, the said under face also being provided with longitudinally disposed channels, one of which communicutes with said lateral channel, legs hinged to said leaf and being adapted when folded to fit within said longitudinal-channels; a brace connected to one of said legs at one end, a block on the other end of said brace slidably engaged in one of saicl-longstudinal channels, and a locking lever slidably arranged in said laterally disposed channel and being adapted at one end to engage and hold said block against sliding movement,
' substantially as describedf 2. In a device of the class described, a
table comprising a pair of leaves hingedly connected together and adapted to fold upon each other, fillers arranged around the edges of said leaves upon the under surfaces thereof, the said fillers being provided with chan nels, le frames pivoted to said leaves and adapte to lie within said channels, the said fillers 'being provided with longitudinally disposed slots, braces pivoted to said legs at In adjusting the device to set-up.
sliding movement of the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix ny signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
