FLOAT FOR BOILER-SKIMMERS.
To all "whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAPHAEL ROSENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincohi, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Floats for Boiler- Skimmers, of which the following is a. full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to boiler skimmers and especially to the floats by which the same are supported in the boiler in which the skimmer operates.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a float which is capable of sustaining the heavy pressure of the steam in the boiler without collapsing. A further object of the invention is to provide such a non-collapsible float which can be easily, simply and inexpensively made.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a portion of a locomotive boiler containing a skimmer provided with floats embodying my invention:

In Fi l I show a locomotive provided with a srimmer in accordance with the invention of myself and Norbert Schreiber, as set forth in Patent No. 1,165,717, issued December 28, 1915. In view of this patent a very brief reference to the general construction shown in Fig. 1 will be made. A locomotive boiler l is shown provided with a steam dome 2 into which is extended a dry pipe 3. A skimmer 4 is shown mounted in the longitudinal portion of the boiler, said skimmer being provided with floats 5-5 mounted on tubular members 6 having side skimming orifices 7. The floats 5 5 are the objects with reference to which my present invention is concerned. Heretofore I have found that the pressure inside of ten metal substantially forms rivets.

boilers, especially locomotive boilers was so excessively high that the floats were collapsed and therefore the skimmer proved ineffective. I have devised and herein show a construction wherein suitable provision is made to resist the external pressure on the float and by actual test I find this construction adequate to permit the use of the float without collapsing. The construction shown (see Figs. 2 and 8) comprises a hollow member of substantially cylindrical form, shown as made of two longitudinal halves 8 and 9. Between these two halves is a transversely extending member 10 which is preferably in the form of a disk. The ends of the halves 8 and 9 are flanged outwardly as shown at 11 and 12, on opposite sides of the rim of the disk 10. Said flanges are provided with apertures as is also the disk 10, and rivetlike members 14 are employed to hold the members 8 and 9 and the disk 10 all together. This may be accomplished by making the members 8 and 9 out of steel, preferably out of shell steel, and then welding the two halves and the disk together. When this is done the holes referred to fill up with the molten metal and such mol- This insures a thoroughly strong and binding connection between the two halves of the hollow member or float with the disk 10 in the middle of the same and forming a very strong cross brace at the center of the float. Such brace is preferably put at the center because of the greater likelihood there to yield to steam pressure, although of course another location could be used if desired. The disk 10 forms a very substantial brace, offering resistance to the external pressure on the float and prevents collapse of the same under pressures which are found in ordinary boilers of various kinds. The ends 15 of the float are preferably made convex so as to afford a maximum resistance to external pressure. In Fig. 4: is shown a modification in which only the central portion 16 of each end is made convex, the construction of Fig. 2 being preferred. The float being completed of steel or other suitable metal or material, I preferably inclose the same in a thin copper shell 17 to prevent corrosion.
