Application filed February 7, 1918 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KINIAs M. J AFFERIAN, a subject of Armenia, residing in the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toys and more particularly to toy figures. The leading feature of my invention consists in the provision of a doll wherein the head is adapted to move rotatably with respect to the main body portion thereof.

In order to enhance the human-interest side of dolls for children to whom they are a delight, it is desirable to impart movement I have accordingly designed a form of doll wherein the head is adapted to be spun about so as to make several revolutions while the body portion of the toy figure is adapted to be held stationary.

One object of my invention is to provide means for efiecting the turning of the head of a doll which shall be simple, eflicient, and inexpensive in construction and in operation. To this end it is designed to provide a doll with a pull cord to be drawn upon so as to operate a rod rotatable within the doll body and carrying the doll head along with it as it turns. When the head is taken hold of and turned around the rod is turned in the act of winding up the cord upon the rod internally of the doll body, and when the pull cord is forcibly drawn so as to unwind itself, the rod turns carrying the dolls head along with it.

With the above and other objects in View my invention consists in the arrangement, combination, and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification and i then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

head spherical in contour and having the likeness of a childs face expressed thereon as by the numerals 2. A. rod of suitable length 3 is attached to this head and is formed at its lower end with a reduced threaded portion 4. So far, I have described the parts of the doll head section of the doll, but the doll proper also includes the body section or portion 5 equipped with the hands 6, the wings 7 extending from the opposite sides of the neck portion 8, and the feet 9. It will be noticed that the neck portion 8 is formed convex for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The body portion 5 is cored out centrally as at 10 to provide a cavity substantially in the belly portion of the doll and disposed in longitudinal alinement with eachother and in registration with the cavity 10 are the holes or bores 11 and 12, the bore 11 opening out of the neck portion of the doll while the bore-l2 is formed at its lowermost end with a cupshaped recess 13 disposed in-a plane with the feet of the doll. Journaled in the bores 11 and 12 is the rod 3 so that the doll head 1 will rotate with this rod. The bottom portion of the doll is cylindrical and convex so as to rest upon the convex neck portion; and reduce friction as the doll head is turned relatively to the body portion.

The rod 3 has its lower reduced portion 4 projecting in the cup-shaped recess 13 of the bore 12, and a nut 14 is adapted to be threaded into this reduced threaded portion so as to rotate in the recess 13 in unison with the turning of the rod. In this manner, the rod is held against longitudinal movement and displacement from the body 5 of the doll, thereby assurin that the doll head 1 will seat properly re atively to the body 5. A string or pull cord 15, has its inner end adapted to be secured upon said rod so that when the string shall have been wound 11 fully on the rod by turning the doll head around, the several convolutions thereof will be accommodated within the cavity or cored-out portion 10 of the body 5, as illustrated in Fi 4. The free end of the strin or pull cor 15 is lead out of the latera passage or opening 17 formed in the body 5 and thereupon by taking hold of this string and drawing upon the same forcibly, the string will be unwound from the rotatin rod, thereupon turning the rod around within the body portion 5 and causing the doll. h ad 1 t tu amend in eni en th the rod as illustrated in Fig. 4:. This will produce an efiect which will be delightful to children.

Of course numerous modifications may be resorted to in practice without departingv from the details of construction set forth.

What I desire protection on and claim 1. A toy figure consisting of a separate body and head portion, said body portion being formed with a central convex part at its upper end, said head portion being formed with a lower convex part adapted to gyrate upon the convex part of said body portion, and means for connecting said head portion upon said body portion.

2. A toy figure consisting of a body-portion formed with a cup-shaped internal hollow at one end and a longitudinal bore leading from said cup-shaped hollow, a rod rotatable in said bore and in said hollow and formed with a reduced screw-threaded portion, a doll head secured upon said rod and turnable upon said body portion, a nut screwed upon the screw threaded portion of said rod and having a head accommodated for movement in said vhollow, and a pull string wound upon said rod internallyof said body portion and haying anoperating portion projecting externally of said body portion.

3. A toy figure consisting of a separate body portion, and a separate head portion,

said body portion being centrally cored out and provided at its upper and lower ends with bores disposed above and below and registering with said cored-out portion, a rod projecting through said cored-out portion and having its opposing ends journaled in said bores, a doll head fixed upon said rod, and rotatably resting upon said neck portion, and a pull cord secured to said rod so as to be wound up upon said rod and dis-,

4. A toy figure consisting of a separate body portion, a rod rotatably mounted in said body portion, a doll head secured to said rod and providing a means of turning said rod within said body portion, said body portion being cored out centrally, and a pull string having one end secured to said rod so as to be wound up on said rod within said cored-out portion, as the head is turned, and having its opposite end projecting laterally out of said body portion so that as it is drawn out, said rod and head may be turned.
