Description

A D. CRIBBIS.
HORSESHOE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22, m1.
Patented Dec. 10, 1918.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY n: rum, "In: a. mum" wnmumw n E DANIEL CRIBIBIS, or nnrnorcc, MICHIGAN. I
HORSESHQE. j
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1918.
Application filed May 22, 191 7. Serial No. 170,258.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL CRIBBIs, a citizen of the Dominionof Canada, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in horse shoes and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for removably securing calks to the shoe.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing the calks in position so as to reduce the danger of the calks dropping out and to make the calks interchangeable. V
A further object of the invention is to provide the shoe with holding means for the calk for receiving the calks from the side edges, and to provide means at the heel of the shoe for holding the calks in difi'er ent positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a bottom view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In these figures 1 indicates the shoe provided with an enlargement 2 at the toe thereof and this enlargement has a pair of wedge-shaped slots 3 therein, each of said slots extending from a point a little beyond the center of the shoe through the outer edge thereof, so that the calks 4 must be inserted from the side of the shoe. I prefer to form the slots of wedge shape in cross section and their bottoms incline toward the toe of the shoe so that the calks will be positioned at anangle to the shoe as shown-v in Figs.2 and .3. After the'calks are in position Iprefer" to punch in the'fmetaloff theenlargement as "shown at 5'in Fig.3, the calks being provided with j depressions 6 to receive this punched in metal.
At the heel of the shoe the enlargements 7 are formed, and each of these enlarge ments is provided with a pair of wedgeshaped slots 8 and 9, said slots extending at right angles with each other, so that one of the calks extends substantially longitudinally of the shoe While the other extends substantially transversely in relationto the shoe. The slot 8 is formed to receive the calk 10 from the side of the shoe while the slot 9 receives the calk 11 from the heelend of the shoe. These calks may be held in the slots by upsetting the metal as before described.
Any suitable form of calk may be used,
and in fact one kind of calk may be removed from the shoe and another kind inserted with but little effort.
As the calks are inserted from the side I edges of the shoe there is no danger of the same dropping out of their slots, and by upsetting the metal as described the calks are prevented from working out of the slots at the side of the shoe.
It will be seen that the slots taper from the outer edge toward the inner edge so that the calks may be driven into the tapered slots so as to be wedged therein and this action together with the wedge shape of the slots combined with the upsetting of the metal will securely hold the calks in position.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A horseshoe having a pair of slots at its heel part, one of said slots extending at right angles to the other slot, and calks held in said slots.
2. A horseshoe having an enlargement on each part of its heel, each of said enlargements having a pair of slots therein, one of said slots extending from the side edge of the shoe inwardly transversely of the shoe, and the other slot extending from the end edge of the shoe inwardly and at right angles to the first slot, and calks held in said slots. 3. A horseshoe having-its toe provided with a pair of Wedge-shaped slots extending transversely in relation to the shoe, said slots having theirbottoms inclined toward the. toe, andealks engaging therewith.
4. A horseshoe having its toe provided with a pair of Wedge-shaped slots extending transversely in relation to the shoe, said slots being arranged on each side of the Copies of thin patent may be obtained fox-five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Iatents,
of the shoe inwardly and at right angles to the first slot, and oalks held in said slots.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two 'W-itnesses.
DANIEL GRIBBIS.
