Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Von, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in'TapeReels for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to attachments for sewing machines and particularly to means for holding a roll of tape and cops of thread in a convenient position relative to such machines.

It has for its object the construction of a tape-reel that is simple and cheap to manufacture, that is easy to replenish and replace,

and that is adapted to accommodate various widths of tape.

It alsohas for its object the utilization of the tape-reel support for sustaining a plurality of cop-holders in a position clear of the support of the sewing machine head and for a further object it has the provision of means for conveniently multiplying the number of cop-holders- Briefly described the construction comprises a supporting bracket having a pair of bearing lugs supporting a horizontal rotatable rod at one end of which is fixed a spider wheel carrying a spring-actuated finger-lever for gripping a pin extending from a second spider-wheel. Between the spider-wheels a roll of tape is adapted to be received.

A vertical rod is also supported by the bracket and a plurality of relatively fixed cop-holders are secured to the vertical rod in such relation that one or more individual cop-holders may be removably mounted between adjacent fixed cop-holders.

The invention further consists in certain details of construction which will appear in the following description of the embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment and Fig. 2 is a sec tional detail showing a locking lever.

A bracket 1 having a base flange 2 is secured in any suitable manner as by screws 3 to the flange 4, or other convenient part of a support for the head of a sewing machine (not shown). between one of the collars and the con tiguous part of one of the lugs. I

To the free end of the rod 6 a spiderwheel 10 is secured in a suitable manner and a lug 11 fixedly carried by-one of the spokes 12 of the wheel is bifurcated to allow movement of a lever 13 pivoted intermediate its ends at 14: to the ears 15 of the lug 11. A spring 16 pocketed in the lug 11 as indicated in Fig. 2 bears on one arm ofthe lever- :13 and tends to turn it about its pivot so as to cause its toe 17 to jam a second rod or pin 18 against the walls defining the aperture 19 in one end of rod 6.- The rod6 is of course cut away as indicated at 20 to allow movement of the toes 17 of the lever for this purpose. The rod or pin 18is rigidly connected to a second spider whee1 21 and it is of suflicient length to allow. the spiderwheels to be spaced in parallelism'varying distances apart in order to accommodate rolls of-tape of different widths.

It will be understood that when the reel is'exhausted and 'is to be replenished the lever 13 may be pressed to release the pin 18 and permit removal ofthe outer spiderwheel 21 which is equipped with a wing or finger-piece 22 for facilitating handling thereof. With the outer spider-wheel in one hand the operator may very conveniently place a new roll on the pin 18. Then after inserting the pin 18 in the aperture 19 the outer spider-wheel 21 may be quickly moved sidewise toward the relatively fixed inner spider-wheel 10 until stopped by the intervening roll of tape against the edges of which the spider-wheels will be snugly held by the automatic action of the spring-' pressed lever 13. It will be noticed from an inspection of Fig. 2 that the toe portion 17 of the lever which is shown in gripping relation with the pin 18 is slightly to the right (Fig. 2) of a point vertically beneath the pivot 14. Thus endwise slidin movement of the pin 18 is permitted to t 1e right (Fig 2) to bring the spider-wheels or side movement ofjpin 18 to theleft Will be prevented by the locking action of the toe 17 of the lever 13.

By adjusting the collars 7 and 8 the rod 6 may be shifted to bring the reel into desirable relationship With the stitching point of a sewing machine. Also by providing a slight frictional resistance to the rotation of the supporting rod 6 slack in thetape be tween the reel and the stitching point may be eliminated. i

In a tape-reel, inside and outside spiderwheels, a supporting rod arranged centrally of and extending at substantially right angles to said inside spider-Wheel, said rod being provided With a longitudinally extending aperture in one end, a pin arrangedisubstantially centrally of and extending at right angles to the outside spider-Wheel, said pin being adapted to enter said aperture,- and a spring-actuated lever movably carried by saidinside spider-wheel, said lever havinga toe portion adapted to grip said pin in said aperture.

3. In a tape-reel, a pair of relatively adjustable spider-wheels, two coaxially jarranged rods supporting one each of said spider-Wheels, meansfor holding said rods against relative movementiin one direction but permitting movement in a-nopposite .direction, a bracket having duplex apertured cars for supporting said rods rotatably, and means frictionally engaging one of said ears for resisting rotation of said rods.
