,.TojaZZiv'nomz'tm/y concermm f Be 1t known that I, FRANK P. Ilftnmna citizen of the United States of America,lrem siding at Chicago, Illinois, `have* invented a 'new -andzuseful Record-File, of` whichlthe following is a specification. v f i My `'invention relates particularly Vto. a` construction for filing phonographdisk records. The main object is to provide a simple .and inexpensive construction which will enable -a number of records ,to be led in afrela'tively vdrawn out, and so Constructed that/the records are held compactly ytogether when the ,container fis in Ithe cabinet, and yet so that 'the records lmay be separatedat .the 'top when the container is withdrawn ,from the cabinet.
Figure 1 isa perspective view fof the fragment of a cabinetfwith two,y .containers ,emvbodylng ,improvementsof my invention, one
Of` the Containers bein-g showingdrawn out from the cabinet.v y
' Fig. 2 is a-vfront view'o-f the fragment of a cabinet embodying improvements .of invention, one of the [containers being drawn out and showing Lthe records separated at the top, the iower partei lthe'containerbeing shown in section.
The cabinet 5 may have any for holding the records.
Each container consists of a bottom mem-` ber 7 a front 8, al back 9, lower side members 10 and upper movable side members 11. A suitable form of handle, such as 12,l isipreferably provided for moving the container in and out of the cabinet. lThe bot-y tomof the container is preferably recessed and provided with ya yielding pad of felt,
' or other suitable material, fory supporting the record disks yand preventing injury.
The upper side members in the form shown are rods or wires bent into substantially U- -orm having arms 14; andpivots orshafts 15v and 16v pivotally supported in' bearings in the'rearand front members of the container.` When the containerl is drawnk out of the cabinet it will be seen that the side members will` automatically fall outwardly into the l RECORD-run.

`positions indicated in FigQZ-so that ready accessv maybe had to they desired record.
It will be noted that Ythe bails may be swung sofas 5to lie either ,above or belowtheir pivotal. 'axes in order to bring them withinthe imaginary planes iormingthe sidesgof the container. Ineither. event, the vbails will A.automatically,be swungoutwardlyinto the v position shown in `full lines in lFig. 2 `by reason of the tendency ofthe contents of -the container to spread apart as soon as the Container -is `withdrawn from `the cabinet. Each record, such as 17,1s preferably mounted behindla guide cardsuch as 18, having a wnecessaryindex number, letter, or vother 1n- .,formation `for :designating the correspondingl record.
. Thecontainer can ybe readily pushed back -into the. receptacle by simply Vdrawing the two side rods ll-llinward so that they will lclear the fedgesof the opening 6. The walls ofy this openingwill hold the rods in their `closedvposition with the rods and lguide cards upright.
l Acrosspieceil) may be provided at thev upperfportion 4 of the opening to prevent' the containerfrom being entirely withdrawn from thecabinet. f. If desired,the cabinetmay have tongues such as 20, and the container corresponding grooves such as 21, so, as'to support Athe fcontainer. in place in the cabinet. l
f Under ordinary circumstances the weight of.: the record is sufficient to separate the 4side f ysfro'ds .into theposition yshown'in Fig.y 2 as number of r compartments, such as 6, with containers soon as the container is Withdrawn from the cabinet. By this construction and method of operation, it is unnecessary to lift the entire contents of the container. This not only avoids trouble in selecting records,but avoids the danger of breakage which is consequent upon handling a large' number of records.
I claim:
1. A construction ofthe lclass described comprising a cabinet; a container having front andrearrwalls. but open at the sides;y and a laterally expanding side member for said containery consisting of a rod bent in 2.`A construction of the class described comprising a cabinet; a container'having frontand rear walls but open at the 'sidesgw" and laterally `expanding side members `fori said container consisting .of rods bent inV-h 5 substantially U-form, the ends of saidrrods;
