Be it known that I, MARTIN S. RUNsvoLD,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident. of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steel- Pullers, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention is an improvement in steel pullers, and has for its object to providev mechanism of the character specified for pulling jammed steels from drill holes,
wherein means is provided for engaging the drill and the face of the drift, andfor withdrawing the steel from the drill hole.

A shell 3 is provided, adapted to be slipped over the stem, and having at one end an outwardly extending tapering flange 4 forming a foot, for engaging the :tace of the drift, as shown. This shell is internally threaded, and within one end is engaged a screw 5, the said `screw having areduced portion 6 extending outside the shell at the end remote from the foot, and an annular shoulder 7 is formed between the reduced remote from the foot, and this collar engages the shoulder 7 to prevent movement of the shell with respect to the screwin one direc tion.

It will be evident that when j the screw is turned toward the shell 3 the dogs will be constrained to grasp the steel i "within the slots,` and when the screw is turned the steel will "beturned therewith.
j The` dogs are engaged with the grooves 2, and it will be `evident that when `the nut 11` is turned toward thefshell the dogs will be caused to grasp the steel in the bottoms of the grooves. "An `ordinary wrench l2, in
common use in mines, is engagedby the steel, and withthe parts in the position of Fig. `l, the steel is turned. The screw is gradually turned down in theshell away i from the face of the drift, and the steel is l withdrawn. A collaror plug 13 is threaded into that end ofthe shell adjacent to the face of the drift, to prevent the entrance of dirt and the like that might injure the threads of the shell or screw.
It will be understood that while the dogs i `are described and shown as adapted `for j grasping pipe, they could be also shaped to grasp diierent kinds of steel, such as round,
hexagonal, plain or grooved.
