Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
Application filed August 3, 1816. Serial No. 112,929.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAsrER H. F RALEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lynden, in the county of Whatcom and State of l/Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in pumps, and has for its object to provide a pump suitable for use with flowing water and adapted to be submerged in the water, and having an intake provided with a turbine propeller which is connected to the pump in such manner that the movement of the propeller driven by the water, will operate the pump, and wherein a double pump is provided, driven by the propeller aranged in a common intake for the pumps.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved pump,
Fig. 2 is a side view,
Figs. 3, 4 and 6 are sections on the lines 33, 4% and 6--6 respectively of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the ar rows adjacent to the line,
Fig. 5 is an end view of the intake, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective View of one of the turbines.
In the present embodiment of the invention, two pumps are provided each consisting of a cylinder 1 arranged with the axes parallel, and the cylinders are connected at one end to a valve casing 2 and at the other end to one of the branches 3 of a Y, consisting of the said branches and a body 4. The Valve casings 2 are connected with the branches 5 of a Y comprising the said branches and a body 6, and the body is connected with the discharge pipe 7. The body 4 of the Y 34 is offset laterally with respect to the branches 3, and the said body is connected with an intake or propeller casing 8.
A piston 9 is arranged in each pump, each piston having ports provided with flap valves 10 for closing the same, and a piston rod 11 is connected with each piston. These piston rods extend out through the branches 3 of the Y and engage guides 12 on a cross head 13 which is secured to the nipple 14 which connects the common inlet 8 for the pumps, with the body of the Y. This cross head consists of a lower section 13 and an upper section 13, the lower section having a bed for the nipple, and the upper section having a U-shaped portion engaging over the nipple, and the said sections having cooperating grooves for receiving the piston rods 11.
The sections are secured together by bolts and nuts 15. The rods are operated by a countershaft 1(3 journaled in bearings 17 on the branches 3 of the Y. The said shaft is provided at each end with a wheel 18, and each wheel is connected to the adjacent piston rod by means of a link 19'. The link is connected at one end to an eccentric wrist pin on the adjacent wheel, and at the other to a laterally extending pin on the adjacent piston rod, and it will be evident that when the shaft 16 is rotated, in a manner to be presently described, the pump pistons will be reciprocated. The arrangement is such that the pistons will move in opposite directions, and the shaft 16 is provided intermediate its ends with a bevel gear wheel 20 for connection with the propeller shaft to be described.
The propeller shaft 21 is journaled in a bearing 22 at the junction of the branches 3 of the Y 3%, and in a head 23 at the end of the intake. and the said shaft has a bevel gear 24 which meshes with the gear 20. Two series of blades is secured to the propeller shaft, each series of blades havi g a substantially conical hub 25 about which the spiral blades 26 are arranged. The two series of blades are spaced apart from each other, and between them the intake pipe is provided with inwardly extending radial directing vanes or nozzles 27.
The improved pump is arranged as shown in Fig. 2, with the pump cylinders and the propeller casing immersed, and with the head 23 up stream. This head as shown, is provided with openings of quadrant form, and these openings are covered by a perforated mcmber 28 for straining the water to prevent the entrance of sticks, stones and the like. The water will enter the open end of the casing and will pass through the casing, rotating the propeller shaft, after which it will pass onward into the pump cylinders.
In operation, with the parts arranged as above specified, the water passing through the propeller casing will rotate the propeller or operating shaft 21. When a piston is moved upward, the water will flow freely through the ports, while when the piston moves downward, the water will be driven out of the cylinder by the piston through the discharge pipe 7 to the place of utilization. The improved pump is especially adapted for irrigation, being placed directly in the stream, the two pumps receiving water from a common intake and delivering the water to a common outlet.
In practice, the blades of the turbine are aboutthree' feet in length and four blades are used. Since each turbine puts a twist or curve in the water and gives it a tendency to follow around the pipe, it is essential to. insert the vanes or nozzles 27 to straighten,
thefiow of the water for the second. turbine.
It will be noticed that the section 14 of the casing has overflow or waste openingsQO.
Iclaim:
In combination, a pair of pump cylinders, a propeller and intake casing connected with the cylinders at the intake ends of the said cylinders to deliver to the said cylinders, a valved piston in each cylinder, a transmission shaft to which the pistons are connected for reciprocating said pistons, a turbine in the propeller casing, a driving shaft to which the turbine is connected, and a driving connection between the driving shaft and the transmission shaft, the pump cylinder being at a lower level than the propeller casing.
