The invention consists in the ;details' of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of'imy improved tool whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simplefle'ss expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with a portion broken away of a tool constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes an elongated shank or handle having one end portion outwardly curved or bowed as indicated at 2 and secured to the side faces of the member or handle 1 at the opposite portions thereof are the spring plates 3. The outer or free extremities of the plates 3 are provided with the inwardly directed flanges 4 for a purpose to be here inafter more particularly referred to.
Threaded through one of the plates 3 and in swivel engagement with the second plate is an adjusting screw comprising a shank 5 having its outer end portion provided with a knurled head 6 whereby requisite rotation may be imparted to the shank 5 so that the outer or free portions of the plate 3 may be adjusted one relative to the other.

The pin 9 is readily removed, after the nut 10 has been disengaged therefrom so thatthe lever 8 and-the memher or shank 1 may beseparated when the occasions of practice so require-and particu larly when it is desire'd ito cleanse the tool or 'to remove rust therefrom.
The forward end portion of gthe lever '8 extends between the plates 3 and has its outer end'substantially flush with "the outer end of the member or shank 1. Carried by the leyer' 8'at a pointbetween the plates3 and extending in the same general direction as said plates 3 is a pin 11 for a purpose which will be hereinafter set forth.
Secured to the inner face of the lever 8 rearwardly of its pivotal connection with the member or shank 1 is an end portion of a flat spring 12 and the opposite end portion of said spring 12 has sliding contact with the inner face of the curved portion 2 of the member or shank 1. The spring 12 serves to normally maintain the opposed faces of the shank or member 1 and the lever 8 normally in contact so that the pin 11 is also normally housed between the plates 3 and thereby efl'ectively protected against injury.
When it is desired to remove the hand from a time piece the shank 5 is rotated free end portions of the plates 3. The tool is then manipulated to position the flanges 4 beneath the hands with the pin 11 substantially in alinement with the staff. Pull is then imposedupon the rear portion of the lever 8 which results in the pin 11 contacting with the outer end of the staff which results in a movement of the plates 3 away from the staff. This latter movement of the plates 3 causes the flanges 4 to force the hands from the staff and upon the pin 11.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a tool constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1 claim:
1. A tool of the class described comprising two relatively movable members, one of said members being provided with a pair of plates straddling the second member, the opposite end portlons of the plates being provided with inwardly directed flanges, the second member being provided at a point between the plates with an outstanding pin extending in the same general direction as the plates.
2. A tool of the class described comprising two relatively movable members, one of said members being provided with a pair of plates straddling the second member, the opposite end portions of the plates being provided with inwardly directed flanges, the second member being provided at a point between the plates with an outstanding pin extending in the same general direction as the plates, and means for adjusting the free end portions of the plates one relative to the other.
3. A tool of the class described comprising two relatively movable members, one of said members being provided with a pair of plates straddling the second member, the opposite end portions of the plates being provided with inwardly directed flanges, the second member being provided at a point een the plates with an outstanding pin extending in the same general direction as the plates, the plates carried by the first named member being resilient. and a member having a shank in swivel engagement with one of the plates and threaded through the second plate whereby said plates may be relatively adjusted upon rotation of the shank.
