Description
R. E. MASON.
Improvement in (Zultivators,
No. 128,497. PatentedJuly2,1872.
Jay. 2 f
ITNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
' ROBERT E. MASON, OF NORWAY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,497, dated July 2, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Gophers, invented by ROBERT E. MA- SON, of Norway, in the county of La Salle, and State of Illinois.
The first part of my invention relates to the combination of shovel and gopher blades in such a manner that they are cut out of one piece of steel and used together. The second part of my invention relates to an improved device for changing the pitch of the gophershares, and also their distance apart. The third part of my invention consists in an improved device for adjusting the pitch of the shovels, and also the depth of plowing.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
A is the tongue of the machine, and to the rear end of it is attached the cross-timber B. To this cross-timber are attached two standards, O O, to which the four shares D D D D are fastened. These shares are a combination of shovel and gopher blades, made of one piece, the peculiar shape shown being necessary in order that they may scour clean when working the ground. The standards 0 C are fastened to the cross-timber B by means of the staples E E, in such a manner that by releasing two nuts the standards 0 G can be raised or lowered, or they can be turned side- -wise,' swinging on the hinged braces F F. The two braces G G regulate the depth of plowing, as also the pitch of the shovels. The doubletree or evener H is placed under the tongue A, and has at each end an iron bar, I, projecting downward. In order to secure a low draft a rope or chain is fastened to the staples J J on the evener H, thence over the rollers K K on each end of the cross-beam B, and thence forward again through the holes in the lower ends of the iron bars I I. The machine is guided by means of a pair of handles, not shown.
What I claim as my invention is The combination of the shovel and gopher share D, made of one piece of metal, substantially as described.
ROBERT E. MASON.
