Be it known that I, JOHN BNIKONOW, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the city of Baltimore andvState of Maryland, have invented a new -and useful Improvement in Monkey-llVrenches, of 'j which lthe following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to monkey wrenches and has particular referenceto such. mechanisms, as employ adjustable jaws with clamping faces, yused in pipe wrenches.
.The object of my invention is to provide a mechanism of the character, above indiinoperation, which provides for an easy and positive adjusting means for its jaws, and which embodies a pivoted handle, acting as a lever on lthe moving jaw and causing a certain clamping eiiect-between jaws to enable my wrench to` be used on round objects, such as pipes.
In the construction of monkey wrenches diiculties have been encountered in making them'sufficiently light, strong and cheap to manufacture and at the Sametime to have a provision for positive clamping of the work between the jaws, t such as isfrequired for pipe wrenches.
According to my`inventionlemploy a pivoted handle, able jaw or on the adjusting means for same, and thereby l secure the desired clamping between the jaws.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of my fmechanism; Fig. 2, side view; Fig. 3, longitudinal section of a modification; Fig. 4, section through 1-1 (on Fig. 1); Fig. 5, section through 2-2 (on Fig. 3); Fig. 6 shows more clearly working` clearance for the screw head in the shell.
The stationary jaw 1 is riveted or otherwise fastened in a body portion or shell 2, which consists of two steel plates, riveted together as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, or a plate bent over, as on Figs. 3 and 5. A movable jaw 3 slides inside of this shell. Thread grooves 4 are cut on the edge of this jaw to correspond with the thread of the actuating screw 5. Shell 2 is made large enough to tit jaw 3 and screw 5. A screw head 6 is provided on the screw for the purpose of turning this screw. This clamping movement 's limited bythe amountof clearance, so that with -13-.clear ance (or lost motion), for instancefthe jaws will move together not over lg, so that my wrench, when properly constructed, while eiiiciently clamping pipes, cannot damage them or cause them to collapse.
Fig. 3 shows a modification, in which the pivot 8 is located between the screw and the stationary jaw, so that there is a slot 11 made for it in the movable jaw 3.
An important advantage of the mechanism above described is, that it is light, strong and easy to manufacture, as it can be made of thin stampings, combining the properties of a light and thin ordinary wrench with those of a pipe wrench.
Having thus described my invention, what lfclaim is:
1. ln a wrench, the combination with a stationary jaw, a movable jaw, movable adjusting means in cooperation with said movable jaw, enlargement on said adjusting means, adapted to be actuated by the operators fingers, a body portion, consisting of two pieces, attached on both sides to said stationary jaw and joined together on the other end, forming a space in the middle for said movable jaw and said adjusting means, an openingin said body portion, adapted to fit said enlargement on said adjusting means, and a lever, pivoted to said body portion and having means to engage the enlargement of the adjusting means to slide the adjusting means and the movable jaw.
