WILLIAM P. PITT, OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR '10 IRVING-PITT MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
LOOSE-LEAF HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed July 15, 1914. Serial No. 851,079.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM P. PITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independe ce, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in loose leaf holders.
It relates particularly to loose leaf books having cooperating segmental leaf engaging hooks. Vfith structures of this type, if the hooks are fairly well filled with loose leaves, it is sometimes diflicult and inconvenient to swing them to the open position.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient mechanism for swinging the hook carrying members to the open position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a housing for the hook carrying members having end caps which, when forced toward each other will effect an opening of the hook carrying members.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention as applied to loose leaf books,
Figure 1 is a top view of one form of my invention, showing the hooks in the closed position, the metal parts being shown secured to the back of a book, portions of the covers thereof being broken away, and a portion of the cover plate being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the metal parts shown in Fig. 1, the cover plate being removed.
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing thehook carrying members in the open position and partly broken away, the cover plate being removed.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of what is shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on the plane of the line 66 of Fig. 1 with the metal parts detached from the back of the book, the cover plate being removed and the hooks shown in the open position.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. l with the hooks shown in the closed position.
Fig. 7 is a cross section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged cross section on the plane of the line 88 of Fig. 6, the cover plate being present.
Fig. 9 is a perspective View of one of the end caps. i
Fig. 10 is an end elevation of one of the end caps.
Fig. 11 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view similar to that shown in Fig. 6, one end only of the mechanism being shown. In this view, the metal parts are shown in the closed position.
Fig. 12 is a cross section on the line 1212 of Fig. 11.
Fig. 13 is a view similar to Fig. 11, the movable parts being shown in the open position.
Fig. 14 is a cross section on the line 1414; of Fig. 13.
Fig. 15 is a plan view of another form of my invention, the hooks being shown closed, and part of the cover plate being broken away.
Fig. 16 is an enlarged longitudinal central vertical sectional view of the device shown in Fig. 15, the cover plate being removed and other parts broken away.
Fig. 17 is a cross section on the line 17 17- of Fig. 16, the hooks being shown in the closed position.
Fig. 18 is a view similar to Fig. 16, the hooks being shown in the open position.
Fig. 19 is a cross section on the line 1919 of Fig. 18.
Similar reference character designate similar parts in the different views. Referring first to Figs. 1 to 14: 1 designates a spring plate, preferably arcuate and having inwardly. turned longitudinal flanges 2 forming seats respectively for the outer edges of two operatively connected hook carrying members, preferably comprising horizontal plates 3, the inner edges of which are operatively connected by buttons 4, each having heads respectively above and below the plates 3.
The plates 3 are respectively provided with cooperating inwardly curved hooks 5 and 6 adapted to form rings for holding loose leaves in a manner well understood.
The spring plate 1 exerts a pressure against the plates 3 tending to hold them in either the open or closed position. Said spring plate is adapted to be mounted. on the inner side of the back 7 of a book having the usual covers 8.
A cover plate 10 may be mounted on the top of the spring plate 1 as shown in 1 and 8.
Longitudinally slidable on the spring plate 1 are two tubular end caps 9 which respectively embrace the respective ends of the spring plate 1 and cover plate 10.
Each cap 9 is provided with a longitudinal extension 11 longitudinally slidable in and conformed to the spring plate 1. Each extension 11. has a longitudinal slot 12 through which extends an upwardly projecting tongue 13, two of which are provided in the spring plate 1 as shown in Figs. and 6.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 141, the ends of each plate are respectively provided with upwardiy and outwardly inclined projections 11 adapted to be operatively engaged by inclined cam faces 15, of wedges 16, formed by raising portions of the extensions 11 respectively adjacent to the outer ends of the slots 12.
The inclined surfaces 1 1 and 15 are preferably disposed at approximately an angle of degrees from the horizontal.
When the caps 9 are forced inwardly toward each other by pressure applied to the outer ends thereof, the wedges 16 by engaging the inclined projections 14 will force the hook plates 3 and the hooks 5 and 6 from the closed position shown in Figs. 11 and 12 to the open position shown in Figs. 13 and 1 1-.
lVhen the hooks 5 and 6 are forced to the closed position, the downward swinging of the plates 3 will cause the projections 1 to impinge against the inclined surfaces 15 of the wedges 16, thereby forcing said wedges and the caps 9 to the outer position shown in Figs. 6 and 11. The inclination of the surfaces 15 permits this to be easily etfected.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 8, the caps 9 by respectively embracing the ends of the cover plate 10, hide the end joints, thereby providing a construction which is ornamental as well as etlicient.
The projections 13 on the spring plate 1 limit the outward movement of the caps 9. Said projections are formed by being punched from the spring plate 1, thereby leaving openings 17, Fig. 1, through which a pointed instrument, not shown, may be inserted for the purpose of lifting the inner ads of the extensions 11, if it is desired to bodily withdraw the caps 9 from the spring plate 1.
Each cap 9 is provided with downwardly and inwardly turned flanges 18 which embrace similar flanges 19 provided at the longitudinal edges of the cover plate 10, and which embrace the flanges 2 of the spring plate 1. The caps 9 are thus guided and retained in their respective operative positions.
in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 15 to 19, the parts are constructed in most respects similarly to corresponding parts in the form which I have just hereinbefore described.
In the form shown in Figs. 15 to 19, the hook plates designated by 3 are pivotally mounted in a spring plate 1 in the same manner as described with reference to the other form of my invention, and have their inner edges operatively connected by double headed buttons 1-, corresponding to the buttons 1, excepting that the lower heads of the buttons 4: are rounded or inclined and respectively engage the inclined surfaces 15 of the wedges 16 formed in the extensions 11 of the caps 9. 1n the plates 3, the projections 14 such as are provided in the plates 3 of the other form of my invention, are eliminated, their function of engaging with the wedges 16 being effected the buttons 4.
1n the operation of the form of my invention shown in Figs. 15 to 19, when the caps 9 are forced inwardly, the inclined surfaces 15 of the wedges 16 will engage respectively the rounded lower heads of the buttons 1, thereby .nvinging the hook carrying members 3 and the hooks 5 and 6 carried thereb from the position shown in Figs. 16 and 17 to the open position shown in Figs. 18 and 19.
By forcing together the hooks 5' and 6, the plates 3 together with the buttons 1 will be forced downwardly, thereby forcing outwardly the caps 9 through the inter inediac; of the wedges 16 and buttons 1.
1 do not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1.
