UNITED srans ATN FRANK MCMANUS, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH W. GARDNER, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR DOORS, GATES, AND THE LIKE.
, Application filed March 27, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MCMANUS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Norfolk, Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Doors, Gates, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a locking device for doors, gates and the like, of simple construction which may be made at small cost, easily applied, and which will afford a secure protection against being operated to the outside.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing Figure 1, is a front with the device in locking position.
Fig. 2, is a similar view with the device in unlocked position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The lock comprises a plate 1 which is fiat throughout, and which may be stamped out or otherwise formed.
It is held to the door by screws or headed pins 2 passing through slots 3, there being two of these slots exactly alike in form. Each slot has a vertically extending portion 4 at its rear end, and a vertically extending portion 5 at its front end, the latter extensions being much horter than the extensions first mentioned. The plate also has two notches 6, reaching up vertically from its lower edge, one of these being near the extreme front end of the plate, and the other near the extreme rear end of the plate and both are beyond the ends of the slots first mentioned.
Besides the two screws or pins above mentioned for holding the plate to the door, I provide a screw or headed pin 7 on the door to be engaged by the rear notch, and on the door frame there is a headed screw or pin 8 to be engaged by the front notch when the plate is in looking position. The plate also has a handle 9 extending up from its upper edge and formed integral-therewith for manipulating the lock.
W' hen the plate is in locking position it is down with its front notch engaging the pin on the frame and its rear notch engaging the pin 7 on the door and at this time view Specification of Letters Patent.
open the door orv gate from with its short slot extensions Patented Nov. 12, 1918. Serial No. 224,999.
the pair of pins or screws 2 by the long vertical rear extensions of the slots. The weight of the plate will hold it down in locked position, and any attempt to open the lock from the outside of the gate or door by inserting a thin blade be tween the gate and its frame will be frustrated by the construction illustrated for the plate can not be lifted by exerting pressure at its front end because'it would then tend to pivot on its rear pin 7 and the walls of the forwardly disposed slots would in such action come against the side of the pins and the tilting will be arrested.
To unlock the device it must be lifted directly vertically and the handle is used for this purpose. No pressure can be applied centrally of the device from the outside, and hence the bolt can not be unlocked from the outside.
When the bolt is unlocked it is resting with the short vertical extensions 5 of the slots engaging the pins or screws 2, and when in this position the bolt will be held against accidental displacement, and it will require an intentional lifting of the bolt and sliding of it to its locked position to secure the door or gate against opening.
To set the lock therefore the plate is lifted, slid longitudinally until the long vertical extensions of the slots are over the pins and then the bolt is dropped which makes it engage with its notches the two locking pins or screws 7 and 8. To unlock the plate is lifted until the horizontal portions of the slots are in line with the pins when the plate can be slid back until the short vertical extensions of the slots are in line with the pins 2 and then the plate is dropped down and held in open position.
I claim:
1. A locking device comprising a plate with a pair of slots in its body portion, one in rear of the other, said slots having horizontal portions with long vertical rear extensions and short vertical front extensions, a pair of headed pins holding said plate to the door, said pins being disposed at a distance apart to occupy like portions of the slots in all positions of the plate, said plate having notches on its lower edge, and pins, one on the door and one on the frame to engage said notches when the plate is in lowest position the plate when unlocked resting on the pins,
are engaged and when locked having the long vertical extensions enga 'ed by the pins, substantially as described.
2. A locking device comprising a plate with a pair of slots in its body portion, one in rear of the other, said slots having horizontal portions with long vertical rear extensions and short vertical front extensions; a pair of headed pins holding said plate to the door, said pins being disposed at a distance apart to occupy like portions of the slots in all positions of the plate, said plate having notches in its lower edge, and pins one on the door and one on the frame to engage said notches when the plate is in lowest position, the plate when unlocked resting with its short slot extensions on the pins and when locked having the long vertical extensions engaged by the pins, said notches being near the front and rear ends of the plate and beyond the position of the slots therein, substantially as described.
Copies of this is locking device comprising a plate with a pair of slots in its body portion, one in rear of the other, said slots having horizontal portions with long vertical rear extensions and short vertical front extensions, a pair of headed pins holding said plate to the door, said pins being disposed at a distance apart to occupy like portions of the slots in all positions of the plate, said plate having notches on its lower edge, and pins, one on the door and one on the frame to engage said notches when the plate is in lowest position the plate when unlocked resting with its short slot extensions on the pins and when looked havingthe long vertical extensions engaged by the pins, said plate having a centrally disposed handle and the slots in the body of the plate having their horizontal portions in alinement, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
