UNITED STATES PATENTQFFICE i 'EoEnABLE FURNITURE.
To all whom it may concern: Beit known that I, HENRY HENscHEL, a citizen-of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement of which the following is a specification.
My invention relat Yjpo toy articles of furniture, andparticu j such as are intended to be out out of sheetsof foldable for example, and afterward assembled in the desired form. The object of my invention is to provide articles of the character designated, and also blanks for such articles, which shall be facture and assemble, and which, be rigid and durable in use, and pleasing and attractive in appearance.
By way' of example I-ha-ve illustrated several preferred embodiments of my invention in whcreini Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank representing one embodiment and intended to reproduce, when assembled,
the accompanying drawingsV N. Y.; AssiGNoR To Mc'LoU ciiiLINl BROTHERS, INC.,
RPORATION- 0F NEW YORK.
' Specication of Letters Patent. y Application led May 24, 1918. Serial No. 236.278.
Patented Nov. 5, 191e.
Fig. 13 is Fig. 14 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 15 is a cross section of the same', Fig. 16 is a plan view of a blank cons tivention;
` shown in. Figs. ing, the toy article of furniture therein illustrated may comprise, for example, a main are associated av pluof my invention an varticle simulating the appearance of akit'chen sink;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ofthe same in assembled form;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank constituting another embodiment of my invention a chair; l Y
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the same 'in assembled form; j
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan'view of the same; Fig. 7 is a plan viewl of ing another embodiment of my invention .and intended to simulate, when assembled,
a chair;
. Fig. 8 is a lan view of a blank constitut ing still anot er embodiment of -my invention and intended vto simulate, when assembled, a tea wagon;
ment of my invention;
a blank constitutj.
Preferably when assembled,
portionl with which rality, herein shown as three,
the depending portions 2 are e herein shown as four in number,
--=Fig. 17 is a bottom plan view of the same; Fig. 18l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 19 is a cross-section' of the same. v
Referring to 1, 2, 3, and 9 of the drawportions for providing depending 'portions 2. In the form illustrated,- the vmain portion 1 may have associated therewith 'an lauxiliary member l for completin the configuration 0f the article when assem led.
a bottom plan view of the same; i
tuting still another embodiment of my 11ithe -iiusaaave' embodiment" l- Associated with the main portion 1 andl la plurality,
of members. 3 for providing supporting members or a legs In theembodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, two of the supporting members 3 are of the remaining two depending each supporting mem er 3 consists of a plurality of foldablev portions 3. Associated with one or more, herein shown as two, of the depending portions 3, are va' .members associated plurality of portions 4 for roviding locking members. Locking members 4 are preferably provided with coperati-ng, opposed slots 4 or other suitable means for causing said members to engage orlock when the device is in assembled form. Associated with another of the depending portions 2 is' a= member 5 for 'providing retaining and binding means to position the supporting tioned depending'member 2. The"retaining member 5 has a'binding member 5 asso.-
ciated therewith. In assemblin v the blank just escribed, the parti is bent portions 2 arev al1 upward until it is angles to main portion-1. The depending bent downwardly until substantially at rightfor the article when -in assembled form.
with said last menthe article t0 .be of? int i 80 'associated' with one of the depending portions v2, while the remaining two supporting members arel each associatedl with one eachv ortions; 2.
to main portion l, after which said meni-A bers4 are put in the lockingfposition by bringing their opposed slots 4 together.
Retaining and binding member is then bent so as to be substantially at right angles to its associated depending portion 2.
This will make portion 5 substantially parallel to main portion 1 and the now locked `locking members 4. The retaining portion 5 is now bent so as to inclose locking members 4. @For this purpose I prefer to make member 5 of awidth substantially greater than, astwice as great as, the depth of the associated depending member 2. ,1n thisA way the binding member 5 and retaining member y5 are properly positioned and held in place to thereby properly position the associated depending portion 2 and the supporting members 3 carried thereby. y
The embodiment shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 1i() is substantially similar to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 9, eX- cept that in this-embodiment several of the supporting members are provided with positioning members or portions in order .tc render the device more rigid and durable. The embodiment shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 10 is intended to simulate, when assembled, a chair. main portion 11; an auxiliary portion 11';
depending portions 12; supporting members- 13, each comprising a plurality of, astwo, foldable portions 13'; locking members 14 provided with the .opposed'slots 14'; retain-,- ing member 15 and associate binding member 15 substantiall as in the case of the a y analogous parts of the species already described. l
One or more of the supporting members 3, herein shown as two such members, are provm vided with positioning members 16 which are referably substantially at right angles tot ieirassociated supportingmembers In assembling the article to be made ci the blank just described, parts 11, 11, 12,
13, 13, 14, 15 and 15," are manipulated as in the case of the analogous .iirst described.
parts of the species the assembly of this device is that the free members 13 of supporting members -13 pro-l tions`12 carrying the other supporting members 13. In this way the positioning members 16 will be brought to bea-r down against the locking members 14 and outwardly against the depending members 12 with which the remaining supporting members 13 are associated. This is due to the natural This embodiment comprises a The principal difference in Lasarte tension'or resistance to folding-of the 'mater -rial of which the vblanks and devices to be made therefrom are manufactured.
In Fig. 8 .I have shown a form of blankconstituting another embodiment of my inrions parts of the device made from lthe blank illustrated.,l It 'is moreover to Vbe noted that in this form there are four depending members 32 Vassociated with the` main portion 31, two'of the'supporting men#f bers being associated withone of these depending members, and the other two supporting members being associated with the opposite depending member 32. In this species also each supporting member 33 comprises a plurality of foldable portions 33' with the outer or free one of which each positioning member 36 is'associated.`
ln Fig. 7 1 have shown still another form oi" blank constituting another embodiment of my invention similar in mostrespects to the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, 6,
'and A10i, except `that in this embodiment the locking members 37, 38 are Of unequal length, a construction often rendered desirable in order to econoignize in the material employed for making the blank.
The manner of assembling the devices to be made of the blanks shown in Figs. 7 and 8 will be substantially clear from the foregoing description, especially those parts thereof relating to the manner of assembling` the devices made of the blanks shown in connection with the first two species above described.
in Figs. ii, i2,ia,14.,and 15 i have inustrated another embodiment of my invention which is similar in most respects to the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, 2,3, and 9 of the drawing.` The principal point of difference is that in the embodiment under consideration the locking members comprise not solely two members, integral or otherwise attached to the main portion of the blank, but preferably a plurality of short locking members 38 and 39, rigidly attached to 'the main blank portion 40, as -by being made integral therewith, and provided with the respective slots 41 and 42 which open in the same direction;
l provide also a separable locking member 43 provided with a pair of slots 44 and 45 which coperate with slots 41. and 42 of members 38 and 39, respectively. The various slots 41, 42, 44 and 45 are so oriented and positioned that" binding member 46 and retaining portion 47, when folded into the Ipositions more clearly shown in Fig. 15, willhelp to maintain independent locking member 43|in locking engagement with locking members 41 and 49 forthe purpose already set forth in connection with the species shownin 4, 5, 6, and 10, -although other positioning means,
Vsuch asithe notches illustrated iniconnection with the species shown in Figs. 16, 17, 18,'.
A and 19, may beemployed.
. Referring to the embodimentJ illustrated in Figs. 16,17, 18, and 19, the same may com'- prise a main blank portion with which are associated aplurality, herein shown as three, parts. for providing dependingv portions 51. In the form illustrated, main portion 50 may have associated therewith an auxiliary member 52 for completing the congurationot the article wheiiassemble'd. C i
Associated with main portion l50 and depending portions 51 are a plurality, herein' shown as Jfour,
members 53 for providing supporting members or legs for the article when in assembled form. In the embodiment under consideration, two of the sup- .porting members 53 are associated with one of the depending portions 51, while the remaining two supporting members are associated with one each of the remaining -two depending portions 5l.- Preferably' each supporting member 53 comprises a plurality of foldable portions 53. l
Associated with one or more, herein shown. of the depending portions 51, are av plurality of locking members 54. Theseas two,
locking membersv are preferably comparatively short members provided with respective-slots 55 which preferably face in the same direction. pendent portion A51is associated a locking and binding member 56, provided with a plurality of cut away portions 57 and the 1 tabs or projections 58 provided with. the respective slots 59 for coperating with slots 55. While positioning members similar to the members 48 and 49 of the-species illus# trated in Figs. 11, 12, 13, 1 4, and 15 maybe employed, I prefer to employ the posi! A tioning means illustrated, comprising a plurality of notches 60 andv 61 for coperating In this embodiment I V have -also shown' positioning members 48 and invention is not to belimited ciated with'at least twoof portions associatedwith said at right angles to their respective dependafv i bers 53..i-:Locking members 54 are then bent i ing portions 51, so as tobe lsubstantially parallel and 'underneath main portion 50,".
after which slots 59 arebrought into locking engagement with members 53 are so manipulated as to bring notches 60 and 61 into binding engagement with respective locking members 54.
It is ofcourse to'be understood that my to the specific slots 55 and'Supporting embodiments herein shown way of eX- ample merely. n
