To all whom z't may concern Be it known that LJonN Cfnmm; a, citizen ofthe United Staten and residing at Bayonne, inthe county of l udmu and State of New Jerney. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Iithwhines: for Driving Nails and the like, of wliclrthe fol lowing is n s )eeifieatiom such as will enable those. Skilled inthe art to whieli it appertains to make and, use the same.
This invention relates to machines for driving` nails, spikes. lark#i or the like and the object thereof into provide a luaehine. of thi` rharncter eountruetial in-suoh umuner a to drive a large uumherof mils and the like into a suitable \\"m'k-pi\ee at one time; a further object being: to provide a uuuhine dehigned |nirtirularly for use in making large nmol for eleetrie eahles or eable non# duittl or` the oppofiite disklshaped uurvluberzs4 of -aid spools; and a further objet-t of the. invention is lo provide a lna'ehine of the elass hrnfeiljiell, whitfh is simple iii toustl'uutiou and meent-ion and eliiei'e'lt in use.
'ifi-ie invention iS fully dineioset'l in the following spettiiintion,v of ivlfieli this aeeompairving drawiu forms" n pnrt.' in w'h-ieh the nepal-ato parts o tn v ijiuprlivenwnt a're de mounted n power shaft 12. one end of which is provided with the usual fly-Wheel 13, and the shaft 12 is provided with two cranks 14, which move the plunger 15 vertically toward and from the table 16 in Slides or guides 17 in the opposite sides of the frame. The tnhle 16 is vertically adjusted by a hand wheel 18 on slides 19 in the usual manner.
In the prnct'ire of my invention, l place on and secure to the top of the table 16 a tool steel plate 20 which is circular or a iproximately eireular in form. and seem-e( to the bottom face of the plunger l5 is a steel plate 21 whieh is also eirrular iu form. The plato 21 is provided with means for eleetrieallv magnetizing it, Said means consisting: of a Awoureo of electrical supply 22 having wireal 23 and 24 which connect with `opposite, sides of the late 21 and placed in the wire Q4 is a wittdevice 25 for makingr and breaking the eireuit4 in said wire. and it will he under stood that the Speeifie means for elect rieally m-ng'netiziug the plate 21 is not shown for reason that it forms no pa rt. o'f my invenion and any of sueh means-i now in use may be employed.
(')ne of the sida members` of the frame, 10 is provided in the outer fare thereof with n vertical reeesn 21' in whieh is mounted a yokeshaped hraeket 27. the inner face of which is provided with n raek eoustruction .ZSin eon ueetion with which a gear 29 operates. The fe-arci!) is' mounted in Said side member'of the frame and is provided with a shaft 30 wheh extends out throygh the rear end thereof and is provided with a hand wheel 31. wherein' the gear 29 may be rotated to move the. bracket Q7 vartieallv in the reeess`26.
The bottom 32 of 'the bracket 27 is en,
pin between the top and bottoni members of 100 the hrueket is a nail feeding and carrying member $55. e0n|pris-.iin r n circular Ybody 36 eomused of a top disk or sheet 37 and a bottom disk or sheet lg secured together and vpared from eaeh other hv rivet pi'ns 39. 10b
The circular body fifi is supported by nu arm s to 48 inclusive will be fed into t lmade larger than tle va fria:I paage of the heads 40 havin a circular band 41 which passes around t e bottoni disk or sheet 38 at the eriphery thereof, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and shown in full lines and in section in Fig. 4, and the rivet pins 39 aid in securing said circular portion 41 to the bottoni disk or sheet 38. y
The other end of the iii-in 40 is hingedI or otherwise loosely connected with a bearing sleeve 42 mounted on the pin 34 as shown at 43, and the nrni 40 is adapted to bear on the beveled face 33 of the arc-shaped bottoni portion 32 of the bracket 27 when swung on the pin 34 from the position shown 1n Fig. 2 and indicated in Fig. 5 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and it will be noted that said bottom arc-shaped portion 32 of the bracket is inclined downwardly and backwardly to give the nail feeding and cairying member a slight inclination.
The bottoni disk or sheet 38 is provided at one side with an extensoii 44, having a plu rality of apertures 45, 46, 47 and 48 arranged in pairs, and said apertures extend inwardly and corrununicate with circular apertures 49,
50, 51 and 52 respectively, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and with this construction the nails fed into the a ortiires 45 lie circular apertures 49 to 52 inclusive from two different sides, or fronieach aperture in the airsof apertures 45 in) 48 inclusive, and y t1lting the feeding and carrying nieniber 35 slightly when in its inoperative position, and by oscillating the saine said nails may be worked around through the apertures 49 to 52 inclusive, as will be. readily understood. In Fig. 4 of the drawing` I have shown a pluralityr of nails in one of the apertures 45 and indicating one nail in each of the apertures 49 to 52 inclusive.
The top disk or sheet 37 is provided with four series of snlallaipertures arranged in a circular path as shown at. 53, 54, 55 and 56, in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and these apertures are arranged ,directly over the apeiturcs 49 to 52 inclnsive in the nianner shown in said ligure, and the walls of said apertures are preferafbly beveled as clearly shown in Fig. 7, or the botttpn of said apertures is top thereof to provide of the nails therethiou h.
In Fig. 7 of the drawingr I have shown on an enlarged scale a number of headed nails 57 supported in the outer circular aperture 52 in the bottom disk or sheet 38, and have shown the magnetic plate 21 in its operative position, or having drawn three of the nails 57 upwardly throu top disk o1' sheet 3 directlv over the aperture 52, and it must be" understood that the top disk or sheet 37 is composed of non-mag netic metal or other material and the extent of the magnetism in the plate 21 will not be h the apertures 5G, in the greater ythan to suspend one nail from any point on the bottoni face thereof or, in other words, will not be strong enough to cause the nail suspended to pick up one of thc nails adjacent thereto iii thc groove 52 referring to Fig. 7 of the drawing.
I also employ a stop device for the nail feeding and carrying nieinber 35 which con sists of an L-shaped plate 58 movable iii wai-diy and outwardly through the Yop )os-ite sido of the frame to which said nieni er is pivoted, or into a recessl 59 in said franic and the plate 58 is provided with a bar (50 which extendsthrough the side of the fraine and is bent downwardly to form a hand piece 61, whereby the saine niay be operated and the nail feeding and carryingr member 35 is pror vided with a projection 62 which operates in connection with the stop plate 58 as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and this construction serves to center the member 35 in the machine.
The operation will be readily understood froin the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accoinpan vingr drawing and the following statenientthereof. As previously stated the nail feeding and carrying mcn'ibcr 35 or the apertures 49 to 52 t erein are filled up with nails when the same is in its inoperative osition, or the position indicated in dottedp lines in Fig. 5 of the drawing, and a plurality of boards 63 are placed side to side and one upon another in the manner Shown in Fi s. 1 and 3 of the drawing, and the top and ottoni layers of boards are directed forwardly and backwardly while the intermediate ,layer of boards are placed at right angles to the other boards and the saine are roughly cut out as indicated at 64 in Fig. 3, but are ca'- pable of being finished to :i circular disk as .indicated by thc dot and dash line 65 in said gure.
After the boards have been placed in position in the manner above described and centrally of the table 16, said table is adjusted vertically to bring .the face of the top board 6.3 at a predetermined distance `from the bot toniy face of the inagnetic plate 2l when at the limit of its n wa'ld movement, after which the nail feeding nnd `carrying' ineniber 35 is swung inwardly into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and moved upwardly by operating the hand wheel 31 to move the bracket 27 vertically in the recess 26 to bring the member 35 into the position shown in lFig. 1, after which thegcircuit in the wires 23 and 24 is closed by operatin 'the switch 25ito magnetize the plate 21, an this operation will vraise the nails 57 in the aper tures 49 to 5 2 inclusive, direct] below the series of apertures 53 to 5d inclusive, through said` last named apertures in the manner shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing, after which the feeding and carrying meniber 35 is moved downwardly by the hand (itl when! 51 in the manner above set out until the top flisli or sheet. 3? cieurs'the hottom of the nails suspeiued from the mag natie plate 121, after which Saifl member swung haelt into the inoperative position.
