Description

R F. AMERICA. DETACHABLE FLAGSTAFF HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 8. I918.
Patented Oct 15, 1918..
RICHARD FRANKLIN AMERICA, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETACI-LABLE FLAGSTAFF-HGLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed April 8 1918. Serial No. 227,355.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD F. AMEmcA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Flagstaff-Holder, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a fiagstaff holder adapted to be secured to a window sill or the like, and more particularly the invention relates to a holder in which the staff socket or holder proper is readily attachable to a separate base plate fixedly secured to the window sill or other support and readily detachable from the base plate, with the flagstaif in removing the latter, whereby the empty stafi socket will not be allowed to remain on the sill to constitute an eye-sore or to offer obstruction to a person operating at or near its position.
, An object of the invention is to provide in a flagstafi holder of the type referred to, novel means whereby the socket element may be attached or detached with facility, and whereby, when in position on the base plate,
it will be securely held against accidental displacement.
More specific ob ects of the invention are respect to the fixedly secured base plate when the socket is removed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flagstaif holder embodying my invention, and a portion of a flagstaif therein, parts being broken away and others in section,
Fig. 2, is a sectional plan view, the section being indicated by the line 22, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the separate base plate with mv improved holder.
In carrying out my invention in practice in accordance with the illustrated example, I provide a base plate to be fixedly secured in any suitable manner to the top of a window sill A or like support. Said base plate in the illustrated example is formed with a series of counter-sunk holes 11 to receive suitable screws 12, three being shown.
On the base plate at the top, are front and rear raised members 13, 14 on which the detachable flag-receiving element may be seated. In the front of the base plate a vertical hole 15 is formed extending through the front raised member 14, said hole being adapted to receive a depending pin 16 on the detachable stalf-holding element designated generally by the numeral 17. Said pin 16 is integral with and on the under side of a bottom plate 18 on the element 17. In the base 10 there is formed also, rearward of the front hole 15, a threaded hole 19 and in the bottom plate 18 there is formed a vertical hole 20 adapted when the plate 18 is in position on the base plate 10 to register with the threaded hole 19. A suitable clamp screw 21, here shown as a thumb screw, is adapted to be passed downwardly through the hole 20 in the plate 18 and engage in the threaded hole 19. The fastener screw 21 thus is adapted to bear firmly against the bottom plate 18 between the raised members 13, 1 1 of the base plate, the arrangement being such that the bottom plate 18 bridges the space between the members 13, 14 and may take a firm bearing against said raised members while the clamp screw 21 serves to tightly clamp the plates, the plate 18 between the members .13, 14: yielding slightly to the clamping pressure of the screw.
A web 22 is integral with the bottom plate 18 and rises therefrom at the front, said web ranging lengthwise of said plate at the center and directly above the depending.pin 16. An arm 23 extends forwardly from the web 22 and is integral with the latter. A rear socket 241 for a flagstafl B is produced on the element 17 at the top of the web 22 and at the juncture of the said web and the arm 23, while at the forward end of the arm 23 is an annular member 25 presenting a throughbore in longitudinal register with the socket- 24. A set screw 26 or the like is employed in connection with the member 25 to bind the stafi B against longitudinal displacement.
The described construction including the relative positions of the pin 16 and clamp screw 21 is desi ned to prevent displacement of the detachable element 17 either laterally or longitudinally of the base plate, while permitting of the ready attaching or detaching of the said element. At the same time the construction permits of the device being produced in light form and yet possess the reguired strength. The device may be made of any suitable metal and given any desired finish to make it attractive.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A fiagstafi' holder including a base plate adapted to be fixedly secured to a window sill or like support, and having raised members adjacent to the front and rear edges of the plate, said base plate having a vertical hole formed therein at said front raised member and having a threaded vertical hole between said raised members, a detachable staff holder element having a bottom plate adapted to lie at the front and rear ends thereof on the raised members of the base and forward of the clamp screw, and means rigid with said web at the top to movably receive the flagstafi.
