TONGUE-AND-SLOT INTERLOGK.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patente-a oet. 15, 191s.
Application filed March 14, 1918. Serial N o. 222,310.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, RAYMOND J. Mo- BREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongue-and-Slot Interlocks, of which the 'following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a tongue-andslot interlock for any and all purposes and of whatever material made.
The object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple construction of the kind in question.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof,
Figure l is a plan View of a portion of a tongue-receiving member and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tongue.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tongue-receiving member and tongue in an interlocked assemblage.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View at line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a tonguereceiving member having a straight slot 2 the length of which slightly exceeds the width of the tongue and the width of which slightly exceeds the thickness of the tongue, whereby the tongue can be readily inserted through the slot. That edge wall of slot 2 which is toward the tongue is indicated by 3.
The'tongue shank 4 is formed toward its free end or head 5 with opposite alined straight edge recesses 6 each extending only part way across the width of the tongue, whereby the latterv is formed with a neck 7 that is bent to bring the body of the tongue and its head at different levels so that in the assemblage of the members the shank portion of the tongue will be in flatwise contact with one side of the tonguereceiving member, and a part of the head of the tongue will be in iatwise contact with the opposite side of such member, the bent neck forming a shoulder asurface of which when the coupled members are strained apart abuts against so much of the slot wall 3 as is opposed to the neck; but to obtain a practically continuous abutment of the tongue across its entire width on the outward slot wall 3, when the members are coupled the lateral ends 7a of the tongue head 5 are depressed below the level of the tongue head in front of the neck, as indicated by the bends 8, extending lengthwise of the tongue head and spaced laterally apart, so as to bring the front edge wall 9 of each recess 6 against the edge wall 3. Forward of the tongue 7 the tongue head is of one level, and at each side of such level the end portions 7a of the tongue head are alined at a different level.
This invention is particularly applicable in sheet and other metal structures. The contours of the two members may be widely varied and each may be provided with any suitable means for securing them toparts t0 be detachably coupled.
What I claim is:
An interlocking device comprising a tongue-receiving member provided with a tongue-receiving slot which has a straight edge toward the tongue; and a tongue having a head formed by opposite edge recesses each having a straight edge toward the Jfree end of the head, and a bent neck between the edge recesses, the free lateral ends of the head being at a level to permit their straight edges to abut against said straight edge of the slot when the members are assembled, the neck being then through the slot, and both members then being in atwise contact.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of February, 1918.
RAYMOND J. MCBREEN.
