Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. BRUNSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rigid Couplings, of which the following is a' specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in rigid couplings and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means whereby the meeting ends of the sections of a drill rod may be conveniently connected or coupled one to the other and whereby said connection or joint is rigid.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved joint of this general character wherein the-strokes of the rod serve to tighten and materially facilitate the efiectivenessof the coupling.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im proved rigid coupling whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that'my invention may be the better understood, I will-now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in sectionof the meeting ends of the sections of a rigid drill rod illustrating a coupling constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of; my im proved coupling as herein embodied with a portion broken away.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings the sections 1 of a drill rod have their meeting ends provided with the reduced extensions 2 having their peripheries inwardly flared as indicated at 3.
The sections 1 of the rod when in operative relation are in vertical alinement and the lower peripheral portion of the upper section immediately adjacent its extension 2 is provided with the threads 4 with which is engageable the locking member or nut 5. The member 5 is herein disclosed as annular in form and provided in its periphery with the recesses or sockets 6 so that a spider wrench or the like may be properly engaged therewith to efi'ect the requisite rotation.
S denotes a sleeve split longitudinally to afi'ord two separable sections 7 preferably of duplicate configuration and the inner walls of said sections 7 from the longitudinal center thereof are tapered in opposite directions so that said sections will snugly engage the peripheries of the extensions-2 of the meeting ends of the rod sections 1. The sleeve S when assembled has its outer walls tapered with the smaller diameter upwardly directed as indicated at 8 and said sleeve Sis of sucha major diameter as to extend slightly beyond the peripheries of the sections 1.
C denotes a collar having its bore 9 tapered so as to snugly receive the sleeve S and whereby it will be at once self-evident that as the collar C is forced downwardly the sections 7 of the sleeve S tightly engage the extensions 2 of the sections 1. and which results in a rigid and solid connection be tween the meeting ends of the sections 1.
In applying my improved coupling the locking member 5 is disengaged from the threads 4' and moved upwardly of the upper section 1. The collar C is then passed upwardly of said upper section 1 and the sleeve S applied. The collar C is then dropped down'over the sleeve S and is firmly forced into en agement' with the sleeve by several blows rom a sledge'or other implement. The locking member 5 is then engaged with the threads 4: and brought into employ in connection therewith a locking key 10.
I also find it of advantage to provide the upper or outer face ofthe locking member or nut 5 with the spaced recesses or pockets 10. Insertible within the pocket 10 is a shank 11 provided with the perforate head. 12. Disposed through the head 12 is a bolt 14 in threaded engagement with the section 1 and interposed-between the head of the bolt 14 and the head 12 of the shank 11 is a lock washer 15. The shank 11 when operatively engaged with the locking member 'or nut 5 serves to hold said member or nut 5 in applied positlon.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a rigid coupling constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1. In combination with the meeting ends of the sections of a drill rod having reduced extensions flaring outwardly, a sleeve comprising separable sections snugly receiving the extensions of the meeting ends of the rods, the outer surface of the sleeve being tapered in one direction throughout its length, a collar slidable over the sleeve, the bore of said collar being tapered to correspond with the periphery of the sleeve, and
a member in threaded engagement with one of the sections of the drill rod and contacting with the end portion of the collar toward which the bore of the collar tapers for holding said collar against movement in one direction.
'2. In combination with the meeting ends of the sections of a drill rod having reduced extensions flaring outwardly, a sleeve comprising separable sections snugly receiving the extensions of the meeting ends of the rods, the outer surface of the sleeve being tapered in one direction throughout its length, a collar slidable over the sleeve,'the bore of said collar-being tapered to correspond with the periphery of the sleeve, .a member in threaded engagement with one of the sections of the drill rod and contact,
ing with the end of the collar toward which the bore of the collar tapers for holding said collar against movement in one direction, andmeans coacting with the rod sections and the sleeve for holding the same against 5 0 relative rotation.
