APPLICATION FILED AHK. 25. |917.

GEORGE STEPANCHAK, OF FARRELL, ENNSYLVANIA.
-FITTING ron BATH-runs.
To @ZZ lw/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE STEPANCHAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farrell, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fittings for Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plumbing and has special reference to a bath tub fitting.
In the usual construction of bath-tub overflow drains no provision is made for temporarily closing such overflow drains when desired.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of overflow drain which can be wholly or partly closed whenever desired.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved drain of this class which is so arranged that the closure may be frictionally locked in any desired position to effect any adjustment from the complete opening of the drain to the complete closure thereof so that the adjustment will not be accidentally disturbed by children tampering with the closure whereby flooding of the bath room may occur.v
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed. v
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a section through a portion of a bath-tub showing the preferred form of the device applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a view from the inside of a tub lequipped with this device.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the top of the drain pipe used herewith and showing a certain elbow forming part of the device.
In the preferred form of the device as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 there'is shown a bath-tub 10 having in addition to its upper edge an opening 11. At 12 is the usual overflow drain pipe which is Provided, in this instance, in its upper end with an elbow 13 fitting around the opening 11 and having a bridge bar 14 extending across its mouth and provided with a screw threaded opening 15 in its center. Between this elbow and Specification of Letters Patent.

the tub 10 is a. suitable packing washer 1G. On the inside of the tub is located a segmento-spherical strainer plate 17 provided with ports 18 and having lugs 19 which lit in the opening 11 to hold the strainer plate properly centered with respect to the opening. A packing washer 20 is also employed around the periphery of this strainer plate. Passing through an opening located in the center of the strainer plate is a screw having a shank 21 the end of the shank being threaded and screwing into the opening 15. This screw has a cylindrical and threaded head 22 so that by rotation of the screw the elbow and strainer plate are forced toward each other and thus clamp the tub around the opening and hold the xture firmly in place. Rotatably mounted on the head 22 is a valve plate 23 having ports 24 and an operating handle 25. By rotation of this valve plate the ports 24 may be moved into or out of registry with the ports 18 so that the passage of fluid through these ports is regulated. In order to prevent accidental or unauthorized rotation of this valve plate there is provided on the head 10 a thumb or butterfly nut 26 by means of which the valve plate may be forced toward or permitted to move away from the strainer and between the valve plate and the strainer is a friction washer 27 so that when the thumb nut is manipulated this washer is so compressed between the valve plate andstrainer that it becomes impossible to rotate the valve late.
p In order to prevent loss of the thumb nut the head 22 is provided with a reduced portion 28 having an opening therein for the reception of the snap hook 29 of the usual stopper chain 30.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In combination with a segmento-spherical strainer plate adapted to be secured over an overflow outlet of a bath tub, a screw freely rotatable centrally in the strainer plate and securing the latter in position, said screw being provided With an enlarged threaded head bearing on Said plate and having a rel atively short transversely apertured unthreaded reduced portion projecting from said head, a segmento-spherical valve plate freely rotatable on said head and conforming to the contour of said strainer plate, a segmento-Spherical friction Washer interposed between the strainer plate and the valve plate to resist free rotation of the latter, a nut threaded on said head to lock the valve plate against rotation, and means t0 prevent removal of said nut detachably engaged in the aperture of said unthreaded reduced portion of the screw and adapted to have a stopper chain attached thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature.
