sum LOGK. APPLICATION FILED MAY 31 I918.
Patentetl Oct. 8, 1913.

MATILDA C. RUSSELL, 0F PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
STRAP-LOCK.
Application filed May 31, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVIATILDA C. RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a strap lock and particularly to the construction adapted for application to a bag or other receptacle where the material is to be drawn together to form atight closure and securely held.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction wherein the strap is provided at one end with a hasp member adapted to fit over a strike lug upon the opposite end of the strap and be secured thereon by a pivoted lock member disposed to engage said strike lug.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the lock in open position.
' Fig. 2, a similar view with the hasp closed.
Fig. 3, a like view with the lock member engaged.
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective of the lock member, and
Fig. 5, a similar view of the hasp member.
Like numbers refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
The numeral 10 designates a strap which may be of any desired character, length or configuration and is provided at one end with a hasp member 11 having an aperture 12 therein adapted to fit over a strike lug 13 carried by a late 14 secured to the opposite end of the strap. This plate is also provided at one end with a pivoting lug 15 upon which the lock member 16 is mounted. At the free end of this member a lock 17 is disposed and may be of any desired character.
A very desirable form of lock is herein shown as comprising a spring actuated latch bolt 18 adapted to "seat in the recess 19 formed in the strike lug 13 and this bolt is protected from injury or tampering by an overhanging flange 20 carried by the lock. By this construction when the lock is closed Specification of Letters Patent.

upon the hasp the bolt immediately engages the strike socket and the parts are secured without the necessity ofusing a key in the locking actionf A suitable key is provided for retracting this bolt in the usual manner. For the purpose of tightly drawing the strap into position a loop 21 is carried at the lock end thereof through which a pull strap 22 is adapted to pass as shown in Fig. 2. By means of this pull strap the hasp member may be readily drawn into position to engage the strike lug as shown in Fig. 2.
In the application of the invention the strap is disposed to engage the body upon which it is to be secured with the hasp end and pull strap extending through the loop upon the opposite end. Power being applied to the pull strap the hasp is drawn into position to embrace the strike lug and the lock member then swung downwardly so that its bolt engages and seats in the recess of this lug while the flange of the lock slightly overlaps the edge of the lug so as to absolutely prevent any access to the locking bolt or tampering therewith. This construction provides means by which the strain upon the strap is entirely removed from the locking members and carried by the strike lug and hasp so that the lock may be readily operated at any time and is not liable to be strained or opened by the pressure of the strap when secured. When it is desired to remove the strap the lock bolt is readily retracted by the usual key action and swung from engagement with its strike lug so that the hasp may be removed. If desired the strap may be attached to the bag or other receptacle or may be separate therefrom.
It will be apparent that this invention presents a simple, efiicient and very economically constructed form of strap lock adapted for general application.
What I claim is:
1. A strap lock comprising a strap provided at one end with an apertured hasp member, a strike lug upon the opposite end of said strap and positioned to pass through said hasp, and a pivoted lock member adapted to seat over and interlock with said lug and retain said hasp thereon.
2. A strap lock comprising a strap provided at one end with a hasp member, a strike lug upon the opposite end of said strap, a pivoted lock member adapted to engage said lug and retain said hasp thereon, a pull strap extended from the hasp end of said main strap, and a loop carried by the lock end of the main strap through which said pull. strap is adapted to pass.
8. In a strap look, a strap provided at one end With an apertured hasp plate, astrike lug mounted upon the opposite end of thestrap to extendthrough the aperture of saidplate and provided with a bolt receiving recess, and a pivoted locking member adapted to seat over said lug and having a bolt adapted to enter the recess therein.
4-. In a-strap look, a strap provided at one end with an apertured hasp plate, a strike lug mounted upon the opposite end of the strap and provided with a bolt receiving recess, and a pivoted lock ng member having a bolt adapted to enter the recess in said lug, and a flange adapted-to overlap the recessed end of said lug.
In a strap look, a strap provided at one end With-an apertured hasp member, a plate mounted upon the opposite end of said strap and provided with a strike lug, a pivoting lug upon said plate, a locking member mounted in said lug, and a lock carried by the outer-end ofsaid member to seat over and interlock With said lug.
6L In a strap lock a strap provided at one end With an apertured hasp member, a plate mountedupon the opposite end of said strap and provided With a recessed strike lug, a pivoting lug'npon' said plate, a locking member mounted in said lug, a lock carried by the outer end of saidmemberand provided 'With a bolt to seat in the recess of said lug, a loop carriedby the lock end of said strap, and a pull strap upon the hasp end'ad'apted to pass through said loop.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 40 tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
