MARK HARRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION LETTER-SHEET AND ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ocas; 1918.
Application filed September 15, 1917. Serial No. 191,649.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK HARE-IS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, inthe county of Bron); and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Letter-Sheets-and Envelops, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices WhlCh providemeans whereby correspondence of all kinds may be conducted without the use of separate envelops and letter sheets, and. the invention consists 1n an improved combination letter sheet and envelop on which the letter or correspondence may be written, and which may be afterward folded so as to form an envelop which may be sent through the mails in the ordinary manner.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawingforms a part, in whlch separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 an inside view of my improved combination letter sheet and envelop in blank form;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the form 'in which the letter sheet and envelop blank is placed upon the market; I
Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 and showing the letter sheetfolded preparatory to scaling;
Fig. 4 a View similar to Fig. 3 but showing the sheet folded and sealed and showing 7 the back of the envelop or package thus produced;
Fig. 5 a view of the letter sheet after the sealing means have been detached and the letter opened; and,
Fig. 6 a view similar toFig. 1 but showin a modification. v 4 y n the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to- 5 inclusive, I provide a combination letter sheet and envelop blank, comprising a body portion a one side edge part of which is provided with a folding portion a, and the opposite side edge part of which is provided w1th a folding pocket member afland both ends of the body portion care provided with sealing flaps a which are gummed on their inner sides as shown at a, and the end portions of the folding pocket member a? also constitute the corresponding 'end portions of the sealin flaps a and are gummed on their inner si es as shown at a letter sheet and envelop blank, the letteror message is written on the inner side of the body part a and on the corresponding side of the folding side edge member a and said folding side edge member a is folded on the line a and the free end thereof is inserted into the pocket a formed by folding the pocket member a the result. of this operation being clearly shown in Fig. -3, after which the sealing flaps a are folded over and sealed to the opposite end portions of the folding member a and also to'the opposite end portions of the folding pocket member a and this completes the operation, as shown in Fig, 4, which represents the back of the complete article, or combination letter sheet and envelop folded and sealed for mailin purposes.
It will and a are provided adjacent to the opposite edge portions of the blank from which said parts are formed with parallel rows of perforations a, which extend the full length of said blank, and in the operation of opening the envelop the entire end portions (1 thereof are torn ofl along said lines of perforations, and this frees the body portion a, the folding side edge member a and the folding pocket fiap a as shown in Fig. 5, and the letter orother message on the parts and a may be read, as will be-readily understood.
e observed that the parts a, a
The modification shown in Fig; 6- is precisely the same in its construction as the form shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive,except that the blank is made longer and is provided with a supplemental folding member a, the effect of this modification'being to lengthen the letter sheet part of the device and provide more space thereon.
In addition to using my improvement for the purpose of ordinary correspondence, the
scribed, or inserted between the parts a and a when said parts are foldedpreparatory to the sealing process.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined letter sheet and envelop blank consisting of a body portion having on one side edge thereof a folding pocket flap and being provided on its other side edge with a folding back flap, folding sealing flaps contiguous with the ends of the body portion and provided with adhesive throughout their length, the folding pocket flap being of a length equal the length of the body portion and the width of the sealing flaps combined and being provided on the outer surface of its ends with adhesive which forms a continuation of the adhesive on the sealing flaps when the pocket flap is folded onto the body portion.
2. A combined letter sheet and envelop blank consisting of a'body portion having on one side edge thereof a folding pocket flap and being provided on its other side edge with a folding back flap, folding sealing flaps contiguous with the ends of the body portion and provided with adhesive throughout their length, the folding pocket flap being of a length equal the length of the body portion and the width of the sealing flaps combined and being provided on the outer surface of its ends with adhesive which forms a continuation of the adhesive on the sealing flaps when the pocket flap is folded onto the body portion and lines of perforations extending throughout the length of the blank near each side edge thereof.
3. A combined letter sheet and envelop comprising a body portion provided at one side edge with a pocket flap which is of greater length than the body portion and is folded over on the body portion and is provided on the outer surface of its ends with gum, a back flap provided on the other side edge of the body portion and being folded over upon the body portion and having its free side edge resting between the body portion and pocket flap but unsecured thereto, sealing flaps provided on the ends of the body portion, merging into the ends of the pocket flap and provided on their inner surfaces with gum which forms a continuation of the gum on the pocket flap, said sealing flaps and the ends of thepocket flap being folded over upon the back flap and pocket flap and being secured thereto by said gum, and continuous lines of perforations extending across the body portion, pocket flap and back flap near the ends of the same forruse in opening the envelop.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
Dated this seventh day of September 1917.
MARK HARRIS.
