Application filedi 0 ctob er19, 1917. Serial N 0. 197,479.
ToaZZ whom it may concern a Be it known that I, ABRAM Mon-L, a citizen of the United States, residing at William? son, in the county of l/Vayneand State-of New York, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements injPlow -Attabhments, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates "to plow attach ments and more particularly to the standard used lH'CODIIGCtlOHWith-tile gage'i wheel. 1 v
A The principal object ofthis intention is to provide simple and effective device whereby the standard-may be-raised or low ered relatively to the plow beam to regulate the depth of the furrowto beiplowed. 1 Another object of this invention isto provide a locking means for the fastening pin used for maintaining the standardiinfits adjusted position. 1 f With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangementof 'partsf'as will be hereinafter fully described andclaimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming p'artof thisspecification, 111 which like reference characters 1nd1-- cate corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure l is a view of a plow showing the attachment in operative position,
Fig. 2 is a fragmental sectional view of the plow beam showing the manner of adjustingthe standard, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 indicates a plow beam carrying a clevis 6, 7 a plow share and 8 plow handles which are connected to the plow beam by the brace member 9, all of these parts being of the usual construction, with the exception which has an opening passing therethrough to accommodate the standard 10 and mechanism for holding it in a desired position relative to the beam.
The standard 10 is substantially rectangular in cross section and is provided on one edge with a plurality of teeth 11 forming a rack bar. The gage wheel 12 is 'carried by one end of the standard. The side of the standard 10 opposite the teeth rests in engagement with the wall 13 of the opening which prevents the standard from being moved out of vertical alinement should the Specification of Later-s Patent.
Patented ea. a, 1918.
casterwheel come into contact with an obstacle in its path;
A 'wheel 14' provided with teeth or cogs 15. is .1nou11ted on the axle 116 passingthrough the beam 5 and which is held in position thereinby the nut l'Tand pin 18 passing through the axle 16. It will thus be seen that theaxle-may be easily removed to replace either it or the :wheelshould either becoinedaniaged or otherwise affected. The wheel has 9 a plurality ofopenings 18, arranged at equal distant. points around its circumference through which the securing pin 19 adaptedtof pass to hold the wheel in a fixed position as will be more fully described hereinafter. The teeth 15 of the wheel engage with the teeth 11 ofthe standard and when the wheel-isfixed inany desired position the'standard will be prevented from ;movement in either an upward or downward direction. a
y The pin 19 which is used for securing the wheel has one end reduced as at 20, which is more clearly seen in Fig. 3, and is provided with a knob 21, while the other end of the pin is shaped to form an eye 22 to which may be fastened a chain to hold the pin connected with the beam preventing loss thereof. The eye also provides a means of gripping the pin to withdraw it from position.
Below the opening through the beam in which the axle 16 is positioned there is a second opening 23, and on the opposite side of the beam and in alinement with this opening there is a chamber 24 in which is secured a spring gripping member 25 which is adapted to receive the knob 21 of the pin securely holding it therein. The openings 18 register in turn with the opening 23 and the chamber 25 making a clear passage way for the pin 23, and the openings 18 and 23 are substantially of the same diameter while the chamber 25 is somewhat larger in diameter so as to allow the pin to be entered therein with out difficulty.
In operation the standard 10 is adjusted so as to bring the gage wheel in proper position to permit the plow 7 to cut a furrow of the desired depth, which will bring one of the openings 18 in the wheel into alinement with the chamber 25 and its alined opening 23, by virtue of the teeth meshing with the teeth of the standard, when the pin 23 may be passed therethrough and forced into the spring arms of the gripping member which will securely hold it from accidental displacement. Of course, if one of the openings 18 should not exactly register with the opening 23 and cha1nber"25,the standard may be moved in order to bring thisabout, the movement thereof being of such an extent,-owing to the numberof openings in the wheel 15, tliatno'appreeiable difference will be observed in the depth ot-theturrow.
Various minor changes may be resorted to in 'the construction, "combination and arrangement of parts withoutisacnifieing any of the principles or departing from the spirit of ithe invention as indicated in the appentl'ed claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim asmew and move is:
1. The 'eomb ination with a @plow beam having an opening t'lTG IGthIOHghfiEI- chamber in communication with the opening, and a 7 second opening in alinementwith the ohamber,of a standard movable through thefifirst opening, a rack 'bar formed on1 the-standard,
"a rotary means secured in thesai d' first opening engaging-withtherack-' bar,1and means passing through the second opening andrrecei'ved in the chamber for holding-the rotary means against movement.
"2. The :combination -with Y a \plow beam having a vertical opening 1 therethroirgh, ea plurality of transverse openings, one of which pass'es part way through the beam and a chamber: in: alinement 'with the openstandard, movable i11 the vertical opening, a
rackfiforme d on said standard, a tooth Wheel rotatable in the vertical opening and engaging *withthe rae'k bar, said wheel having a plurality of openings alinecl at times with the said chamber and the opening passing ,partially through the beam, and a means "passing through the alined openings an dre- "ceivedi in the chamber for securing the tooth wheel against rotation.
3. The combination with a plow beam having a 'vertical :opening therethrough, a transverse: passage way through the beam, a
second opening passing partially through the beam, a chamber communicating with the-Wertical opening and 1 inralinement with the second opening, and ra; gripping means mounted int-the ch amber; of a standard movahlymioun-tedin the vertieal opening,- a rack bar formed zon the standard, a tooth wheel mounted ini the T vertical opening and engagi ng "-with 1 the rack bar, the wheel having a pl uralityoof openings ialining with the chamberz'ian'd its alined opening, and means having ai'lcnob thereon passing through the alined openings and held in the chamber by timer-gripping; means.
