To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, ISIAH Dow. a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in garment supporters, the main object of the invention being to provide a device for supporting the trousers from the vest of the wearer in such a manner that the trousers may be properly adjusted as to length and supported without the necessity of adjusting a belt too tightly or adjusting the suspenders to throw too much strain upon the shoulders of the wearer.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be readily and conveniently detached from the vest or trousers, which allows free movements of the body of the wearer without strain upon the garments or fastening connections, which may be employed for engagement with either a belt or buttons upon the trousers, and which when used with a belt will prevent the belt from shifting or twisting.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:

In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a supporter comprising an upper fastening member 1, which may be in the form of an ordinary safety pin, a lower fastening member or clamp 2, and an intermediate elastic connection or webbing 3 extending between and uniting said fastening members.

The fastening member or pin 1 has its shank engaged with a sleeve or tube 4 which couples the same with a loop 5 through porter as a whole to contract the plate 8, the belt being which the upper portion of the elastic connection passes, the lower portion of said elastic connection passing through a similar loop 6 connected with a knuckle 7 formed in the upper end of the fastening member or clasp 2. The connection 3 is preferably in the form of a looped or endless piece of webbing, which passes through the members 5 and 6 and has its ends sewed or otherwise suitably united.

The fastening member or clasp 2 is formed of sheet brass or other suitable sheet metal, nickel-plated or otherwise suitably finished and comprising a back plate 8 and a front plate 9, the said front plate being bent upwardly from the back plate in the form of a hook-shaped clasp or clamping member, which terminates'below the upper end of the plate 8. The hook 9 is preferably bent inwardly at a central point toward the plate 8 to grip an interposed object against said plate 8. and is thence bent outwardly toward its free end at a suitable angle to form :1 flaring passage to the space between the hook and back plate, for the free insertion and withdrawal of the clamped object.

description that the fastening members 1 and 2, in addition to being pivotally connected with the loops 5 and 6 for free back and forth movements on said loops, are also yieldingly united by the elastic connection 3. which is adapted to allow relative play of the fastening members, to permit the supand expand longitudinally, while at the same time permitting free flexion of the parts as a whole upon one another in different directions.

In employing the invention for use as a supporter, one of the supporters is arsed at each side of the person to connect the vest 8 and trousers 9 at a point in proximity to the sides of the waist and above the hips. In applying each supporter, the fastening pin 1 thereof is secured to the inside or lining of the vest, while the fastening member 2 is secured either to the belt 10 or to a button 11 applied to the inside of the waist band of the trousers. In the use of a supporting belt 10 it will, of course, be understood that the hook 9 is engaged with the belt andholds the same clamped against held with sufficient firmness to prevent it from shifting or twisting. When so applied, the supporters at the opposite sides of the garment will sustaln the entlre or greater part of the weight of the trousers from the vest, thus supporting the trousers in proper position and at the same time holding the vest down and preventing it from riding up at the sides. The elastic connection 3, it will be evident, allows free expansion and contraction of the supporter to accommodate itself to certain body movements of the wearer, without imposing strain upon the garments or upon the fastening members. The trousers may therefore be held supported without drawing the belt objectionably tight, and by simply varying the position of the fastening members 1 of the supporters upon the vest the length of the trousers may be regulated to a mcety. The fastening members are also adapted for pivotal movements on the buckles to allow certain other body movements without straining the fastening connections. In the event that the supporters are used when a belt is dispensed with and suspenders are employed, the fastening members 2 are connected with the buttons 11 at opposite sides of the trousers.

For this purpose the plate 8 of each supporter is provided with means to engage the button consisting of an opening 12 of the size to permit of the'passage of the button and communicating at its lower end with a vertical slot 13 designed to receive the button shank or connecting threads, by means of which the fastener 2 will be held confastening member embodying a back plate and a front plate forming an engaging hook, said back plate being provided with a button engaging slot and the front plate passing over the button so engaged and protecting the latter, an upper garment engaging member, and an extensible and contractible elastic connection positioned between said members, a substantially rigid loop. for securing the lower member to the elastic conrection, a similar loop passing through the upper portion of the elastic connection, and a tubular device through which the loop last mentioned and a portion of the .garment engaging device passes, said loops and tubular device permitting of swinging movement above and below the elastic connection and with reference to the upper garment engaging member.
