Description
AA. E. ROGERS & G. w. WEBB.
Candlestick.
Patented June 18, 1872 Fkacfss.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS E. ROGERS AND GEORGE W. WEBB, OF LA. GRANDE, OREGON.-
IMPROVEMNT IN CANLES'TICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,989, dated J une 1S, 1872.
Specification describing our Improved Automatic Candlestick, invented by Aires EM- ERSON ROGERS and. GEORGE WASHINGTON WEBB, both of the town of La Grande, county of Union, and State of Oregon.
Our invention relates to the construction of a candlestick so as to effect a saving of the lower part of the candle when burned to the socket, the drop of the pipe or stem from the base operating automatically so soon as the candle, when burned down, reaches the mechanical contrivance, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
vFigure l represents a sectional elevation of our invention. l
A-is the stock or stand, made of any ordinary or suitable material, either of metal, wood, or vegetable gum. B is the stem or pipe, in which the candle is placed as in ordinary Ways. or stem, which is attached to the main stem by means of a hinge, a. D is a rim, made of metal, and is part ofthe upper part of the stem O, but is Weighted down on one side, b, so as to cause it to fall automatically so soon as the candle has burned down so low as to let the drop C act automatically. E is a socket in the stem or pipe, in Which the bottom of the candle rests. F is an opening in the upper part of the stem C, so as to admit the lighted candle passing through or under it when automatically operated. G represent-s the joint Where the drop C falls from. a isa hinge connecting the parts B and C together.
Having thus described the parts of our invention, We will nour proceed to describe its operation: The candle is placed in the stock C is the upper part of the pipe' through D, thence down and through the part C till it reaches the socket E. This places the t candle in its proper position for lighting, and
renders the Whole Candlestick perfect. When the candle has burned down to just belouT the inner rim of the part D the rim, by its own gravity, drops, in consequence of the Weight b, and leaves the stump of the candle to burn till it has burned completely out in socket E.
It will be seen that by this mechanical device a large amount of candle is saved to the consumer.
We do not confine ourselves to the manufacture of our improved candlestick of metal, as other substances can be advantageously used, such as porcelain, terra-cotta, and vegetable gums, &c.
O I wim.
Having thus fully described our invention, its construction and operation, We nour claim as new, and as ours, and for which We desire GEORGE TVASHINGTON WEBB.
Witnesses SOLOMON ALBERsoN, M. B. MALLORY.
