Be it known that I, JACOB DENEMARK, a citizen of Russia, residing at Trenton, Mercer county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Cigarette-Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.

This invention relates to improvements in cigarette cases, the-object being to provide a container or case for-cigarettes arranged to.

eject one cigarette ata time, at the will of a user. My invention is intended to obviate the necessity of manipulating abox' or case to open a cover whenever a cigarette is desired. Furthermore, my improved case prevents injury to cigarettes, due to the lashing of the same in a partly filled box, as I provide means to maintain the igarettes in a snug packed condition at all times.

I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will point out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawin wherein I Figure 1 is a sectional top plan view of a cigarette case made in accordance with my improvements, the section being taken on a line 11 in Fig. 2, the case being illustrated as prepared to receive its quota of cigarettes;

Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view illustrating the case as partly filled with cigarettes, the section being taken on a line 6-6 in Fig. 2, the ejector being indicated by dotted lines, the lover therefor being omitted.

As herein embodied, my invention consists of a case body portion 7 having a double bottom comprising the plates 8 and 9, spaced apart as at 10, to receive a lever 12 for manipulating a transversely slidable ejector 13 (Figs. 1 and 2). The lever 12 is pivoted at 14: to the plate 8 and carries an extension or keeper 15 which projects into the interior 16 of the box into which the cigarettes (indicated by 17 Fig. 6) are placed. The keeper 15 assists in the retention of a follower-plate 18 which acts as a pusher for the cigarettes. In combination with the keeper 15, I employ latches 19 which are arranged to engage a beading 20 located at the upper edge of the follower or The function of the keeper 15, atches l9 and cooperating beading 20 is to retain the follower retracted, against the tension of a spring 21, while the box is being loaded or charged with its quota of cigarettes. When a box is to be refilled, the pusher will be drawn back and locked by said keeper and latches, as illustrated in Fig. 2; hence will not in any way interfere with the loading of the box.

The latches 19 are carried by a tongue or extension 22 on the front wall 23 of the box,

. said tongue being provided'with a latch'2 l to engage a cover 25, to maintain same closed. The function of the ejector 13 is to force the cigarettes, one at a time, through the opening 26 in the side wall 27 of the case. The ejector 13- consists of a. plate having a slot 28 and an upstanding projection or Ii 29 located about in line with the side wal 30 of the case (see Fig. 6). The ejector is slidably retained in position by a lug 31 (Fig. 4) projecting downwardly int'o'the space 10 between the bottom plates 8 and 9. The lug 31 passes through the slot in the ejector; hence the said e ector will be slidably posi-' tioncd at the end of the upperbottom-pl'ate 8 in a trough 32 at the adjacent end of the casing. In this instance, the trough is a "turned over portion of the bottom-plate 9 and has hinged thereto, at its free edge, the adjacent end of the cover 25,as indicated at 33, Fig. 2. The ejector 13 is movedto and fro by the lever 12, which is provided with a slot 3 1 to receive a pin 35 carried by the ejector 13.

As can be seen in Fig. 6, the spring 21 vill automatically force the cigarettestoward the rounded or trough end 32, and there will at all times be a cigarette positioned in line with the projection 29 on the ejector 13.

To eject a cigarette, the handle 34 of the lever will be pulled toward the left in Fig. 1, thereby forcing the ejector to the right, which movement will force the cigarette located in the trough 32 out of the opening 26. Then the ejector is retracted by the spring 35 (Fig. 1) the spring 21 will force the pile of cigarettes toward the trough 32, thereby placing another cigarette in line with the projection 29 on the ejector.

One of the features of my invention is the means for releasing the latched pusher or follower 18 after the box has been filled with a supply of cigarettes. As has been stated, the follower is held in a retracted position to enable the box to be filled.

' After the box is filled, it will be necessary to release the latched follower in order that the spring can perform its function. To automatically release the follower, Iprovide the cover 25 with a pin or projection 36 which, when the cover is closed, after the box has been filled, will contact with the follower and force same out of engagement with the latches 19. The action of forcing the pusher out of engagement with the latches 19 will tilt it sufficiently to permit the spring to force the follower over the keeper 15 and from under the projection 36, after which the follower will be forced against theadjacent end of the pile of cigarettes.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. In a cigarette case, a box-like body portion comprising side members, a plurality of bottom-members spaced one from the other, a lever pivotally mounted within the space between said bottonrmembers, an ejector located at one end of said case and operatively connected to one end of said lever, a keeper carried by the pivot for said lever, projecting into said box, a pusher within said box, arranged to be held in a retracted position by said keeper, when the box is to be filled, and means to automatically release the pusher from engagement with said keeper when the cover of the box is closed.

2. In a cigarette case, a box-like body portion comprising side members, a plurality of bottom-members spaced one from the other, a lever pivotally mounted within the space between said bottom-members, an ejector located at one end of said case and operatively connected to one end of said lever, a keeper carried by the pivot for said lever, projecting into said box, a latch car ried by the box, a pusher within the box arranged to be held in a retracted position by the keeper and latch, while the box is being filled, a cover for said box, and means carried by the cover to automatically release said pusher when the said cover is closed.

3. In a cigarette case, a box-like body portion to retain a plurality of cigarettes, a pusher to normally force the cigarettes to ward one end of the box, a latch carried by one end of the box, a keeper located in the bottom of the box and positioned adjacent that end of the box which carries the latch,

said pusher being arranged to engage said keeper and latch while the box is being filled, and means carried by the cover to force the pusher out of engagement with the keeper when the cover of the box is closed.

4. In a cigarette case, a box-like body portion to retain a plurality of cigarettes, a cover therefor, a latch carried by the box, a pusher to normally force the cigarettes toward oneend of the box, means carried by the pusher and located intermediate the ends thereof to engage said latch, whereby the pusher is retained in retracted position while the box is being filled, a spring to actuate the pusher, a keeper carried by the box to engage the pusher when said pusher is engaged by said latch, and means to force the pusher out of engagement with said latch when the cover of the box is closed,

after which said latch will be pushed over said keeper by the actuating spring for the pusher. V V
