Description

JOHN R. GROVES.- I
Tailors Heating-Stove. No. 127,866. Patem dmnemmn.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAlLORS HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,866, dated J une 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. GRoVEs, of Hightstown, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Heating Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are details of the same.
This invention has relation to a heating apparatus for tailors use; and consists in the combination, with a stove for heating irons, of a steamgenerator, all the parts being constructed and arranged as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents the base of my improved heating apparatus. This base may be of any appropriate shape or design. B represents the fire-pot or cylinder, constructed with a surrounding space, 0, to contain water,
. and allow steam to be generated by the heat of the fire in the pot. The steam is conducted from the generator by means of pipes, and used as desired for the various purposes to which it can be applied by tailors in making up garments. A cock, C, fitted to the lower part of the generator, is used in drawing off hot water for spongin g, &c. Above the combined stove and steam boiler is located the iron-heatin g oven, consisting of a cylinder, D, preferably greater in diameter than the stove. This oven is provided with a slotted or perforated rack or shelf, E, to hold the irons, and
with a register, F, arranged below said shelf,
and designed to regulate the flow of heat from the fire to the irons, and also to shut off the passage of heat to the oven while the fire is being kindled. The stove-pipe G leads from the oven, and is provided with two smoke-conducting sections, H H, one located above and the other below the iron shelf and register. Within each of these sections is arranged a damper, it. While the fire is being kindled, and at other times, the register is closed, and also the damper of the upper section. The draught then is created through the lower section. Afterward the register is opened, the
lower damper closed, and the upper damper opened. The heat will then pass up through the register and come in contact with the irons, heating them properly and quickly. I represents a tube leading from the steam-boiler into the stove-pipe. To the top of said tube is fitted a safety-valve, which will open to allow the superfluous or extra head of steam to escape. The escape steam tends to produce a powerful draught in the stove-pipe and prevents the stove from smoking. J represents a door, through which the irons are put into and taken out of the oven. J is a smaller door, through which fuel is put. A door for the same purpose may-be arranged at the lower part of the stove.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The construction and arrangement of the fire-pot B, surrounding water-chamber O, and surmounting iron-heating oven D, substantially as specified.
2. The hcatin g apparatus for tailors use, having the fire-pot B, surrounding water-chamber (l, surmounting iron-oven D with shelf E and register F, stove-pipe G with upper and lower sections H H having dampers h, and the steamtube I, all arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. GROVES. Witnesses:
JAMES M. DAVISON, WM. L. LARING.
