To all whom it mayconcern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. Vnnrn, a Z:
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago'Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements innRadial Drills, of which the following is a specification.

a type of radial drill which -may be used interchangeably as an ordinary radial drill or as an ordinary drill press.
The principal objects of the invention are to'provide a drill of the class described which shall be self-contained while at .the same time of such design and construction that it may be applied to the wall or post of a building or other suitable vertically extending support; to provide a. drill of the wide an improved radial drill of the character referred to.
In the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fi g. 1;
Fig. '3 is a scction taken onthe line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents either the wall or a post of a building to which are secured, by means of suitable bolts 11, the upper and lower flanges 12 and 13, of a cast iron bracket 14. Said bracket 14 has upper and lower heavy outstanding lugs or seats 15 and 16, said seats 15 and 16 having bolted thereto caps 17 and 18. The parts 15 and 17, and 16 and 18, are bored out to constitute clamps for an axially vertical heavy turned cylindrical column 19, said column being rigidly secured in position by tightening up the bolts 20 and 21.

as shown at 24, and equipped with clamping screws 25 and 26 which pass through the split'lugs 27 and 28 for the purpose of enco I abling the said arm 23 to be locked securely upon said column inany desire-d angular position.
Over thetop of the fixed column 19 there is located a rigid mounting 28? in which is journaled an axially horizontal shaft 29, power-driven by a suitablepulley 30 and belt 31. To the inner end of said shaft 29 there. is keyed a bevel gear 32'which drives -an axiallyvertical bevel gear 33 journaled in the upper end of the column 19. Said bevel gear 33 is coaxial with the said column 19 and drives a bevelgeai 34 keyed to the endrof a horizontal shaftx35 journaled at its inner end in the upper part of a small arm or bracket 36 extending upwardlyfrom the main horizontal arm 23.
Said shaft 35 is milled out longitudinally to providea key-way. 37 accommodating a key for driving the bevel gear 38 which actuates the spindle of the sliding drillhead 39. The drill-head 39, together with its associated mechanism for driving and feeding the spindle and forelfcct'ing radial sliding movement of the head, is of approved and well known construction, and requires no detailed descriptionin this application.
The column 19 which, as shown, is of considerable diameter and hence designed for great rigidity, is extended a considerable distance down below the bracket arm 16 so as to accommodate the sliding hub 40 of a heavy arm 41 arranged to rotate upon said column 19. The said hub 40, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is equipped with a split clamp portion 42, similar to the clamping means of the radial arm 23. The outer ent of the said arm 41 is formed with an axially vertical boss 43 for rotatably receiving the stem 44 of a circular drilling table 45. The table 45 can be locked against rotary movement in the boss 43 by means of a split clamp 46.
Since the table 45 and arm 41 are of considerable weight, when the device is made in large sizes, I prefer to utilize special height of the table. To'this end, I'einploy an axially vertical adjusting screw 47 rotatably mounted in a pair of bracket bearings 48 and 49 bolted, respectively, to the arm 16 and the lower extremity of the column 19. Said adjusting screw 47 is driven by means of a bevel gear 50 pinned to the ;vertically to fit the said adjusting screw 47,
rotation of which by theineans just de-' scribed,- raises and lowers the bracket 55 in anobvious manner. 1 Vertical movement of the bracket 55 is transmitted to the hub 40 of the arm 41 by means of a pair of lugs 56 V and 57 constituting integral parts of the ency of the bracket 55 to said bracket 55 and spaced apart a sufficient distance to admit the hub 40. Preferably, the lower lug 57 is made wide enough to embrace a considerable arc of the column 19 (see Fig. 3) so as to eliminate any tendrotate with the screw 47. a i
In'view of the above description, the operation of the device is self-evident. When it is desired to use the apparatus purely as a radial 'drill,for instance, when operating upon some part of a motor truck,the clamp 42Lis released, enabling the arm 41 and table 45 to be swung around out of the way, thereby permitting the object to be drilled to be rolledor otherwise moved un der the radial arm 23. The apparatus thus has every advantage of a radial drill of the ordinary wall type;
The apparatus may also be efficiently employed for all purposes for which the usual drill press with a fixed spindle has heretofore been used.

When so employed, the drill-head 39 is adjusted in such position along the radial arm 23 as to bring the cenporting table '45, where objects of only moderate dimensions are to be'operated upon.
