To alt whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK SYJUD, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, resident of Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bevel-Protractors, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates to improvements in mechanics tools and particularly toA types known as bevel protractors, used in determining and laying olf angles.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a tool having opposed pivotally en gaged arms which may be extended uniformly and alike from a median line, thereby greatly facilitating the operations of the tool.
Another object is to provide a tool in forms which may be compactly folded when not in use, and which may be cheaply constructed by ordinary shop methods.
These and other like objects are'attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bevel protractor made in accordance with the invention, the arms being shown in a closed positibn.

In the principal embodiment of the invention, a pair of arms or leaves 14 and 15 is formed with a longitudinal marginal groove or recess 16, adapted to receive part ,of the center bar 18, the bar having a pro- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

The opposite end of the bar has formed with it circular plates 20 and 21, adapted to be received in appropriately formed Openings 22, communicating with the grooves 16, and which are held therein by rivets 24, the same passing through perforations 25 formed in the arms 14 and 15, and rigidly engaging in similar perforations 26 formed in the circular elements 20 and 21, the rivets 24 having attached to their outer ends index lingers 30, the point of which registers with a circular row of graduations 32 impressed upon the rounded ends of the arms 14 and 15, which, taken in connection with the numerals 33, permit the angle between the arms and the center bar 18 to be visually ascertained.
The rounded ends of the arms 14 and 15 are provided with extending teeth 34 and 35, the teeth of one arm intermeshing with the teeth of the other, in such manner that when one of the arms is moved relative to the center bar 18 the Other arm is caused to move correspondingly, so that the angles between the arms and center bar are uniform upon each side .of the latter element.
It is further to be noted that a series of graduations 38 are formed upon the outer edges of the arms allowing the tool to be used as a rule or scale.
In the modification shown in Fig. 12, the arms 14 and 15 are secured by the rivets 24 to extensions 40 formed with the center bar 18, the same having a projection 41, in which is slidably engaged a rod 42, provided with an extending operating knob 43 at its outer end, and having at its lower end an enlargement 45, to which are attached links 46 and 47, the ,outer ends of the links being pivotally connected with the corresponding arms 14 and 15.
In operating this form of the tool it Will be obvious that both arms are opened or closed relative to the center bar 18 by manipulating the knob 43.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is.-
1. A bevel protractor comprising a pair of arms having a longitudinal groove in one edge thereof, a center bar adapted to be received in the groove, a head formed with said center bar, said head being engaged in 'within the" mentioned one endyof said' arms7 pivotall connections between said arms and said head whereby said arms may be opened/or closed Vrelative to said center bar, said arms having a plurality of graduatioiis arranged in a concentric row and indexes formed with the .connecting means,y said indexes being rigid with said center bar.
2. A bevel protractor comprising a lpair of arms adapted to be arranged with the edge of' one"adj`acent to the edge ofthe vother and containing grooves formed in the adjacent'edges, a center bar'rec'eivable grooves, formed with said center bar upon which the arms arepivotally'engaged, a plurality of ypins rigid in the 'said head, indexes formed with said pins,said indexes determining the angle of the opening between said arms and a head said center bar, and a plurality ofl teeth formed concentrically upon the ends of said *arms7 the teeth on one arin engaging with the teeth on th'eother so as to cause simultaneous movement of said arms.
3. In abevel protractbr, the combination with a pair of arms, segmental gears formed. at one end of each ofsaid arms',- a support for each of said arms, pivot-al connections between said arms and said support, a bar formed with saidesunport extending centrallv between said arms, a rod movable Iwith `respect to said bar, and link connections between said rod andsaid arms whereby botli arms are operated simultaneously b v the movement of said rod.
