The mam ob ect of this invention is to re-arrange the elements associated w1th the transversely movable carriage in such a manner that a lighter and more compact struclBlIl'O. and a better balanclng of the carriage may be obtained.
One feature of the. invention resides in the rearrangement of the partswhereby the tabular stop bar is located in. a plane between the usual carriage release mechanism and tabular stop block together with means for actuating both the carriage release mechcludes 'a pivotally mounted rack releasing lever and the tabular stop block is pivotally Supported on the rear wall of the main frame. in a plane back of the tabular bar' together with means intermediate the rack releasing lever and the tabular stop block which, when actuated by the tabulator key, will tilt the carriage feed rack rearwardly out of engagement with the escapement pinion and will at the same time tilt the tabular stop block forwardly to co-act with the tabular rod.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a brake element mounted independently of the carriage and which moves in the same direction as the tabular stop block to effect braking engagement with the carriage. The tabular stop block 20 is here shown in the'forin of a lcver pivoted on the framework at 21 and having a downwardly progjecting extension 22. Normally, a spring 23' urges the tabular stop block into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 7, that is, out of engagement with the stops carried on the tabular-bar. At the other end of this rock shaft 36 there is a lever 38 which is in a plane between the downwardly projecting extension 17 of the-rack releasing lever and the downwardly projecting extension 22 of the tabular stop block. It will be understood that when the tabulator key 31 is depressed, the vertical arm 33 is .moved forwardly pulling the link 34 with it and imparting a clockwise turning movementto the rock shaft 36, thereby causing the lower end of the lever 38 to engage with the extension 17 and the upper end of 38 to engage withthe extension 22. This action causes the rack releasing lever 13 to be tilted rearwardly on its pivot 14 thereby lifting the carriage feed rack 8 out of engagement with escapement the engagement of pad 16 with the underside of the transverse member 9, causing the rearwardly extending projections 10 to swing around their pivots 11 against the action of spring 12. At the same time the lower extension 22of stop block 20 is moved rearwardly thereby tilting the stop block itself forward into the plane of stop 19 carried on tabular bar 18, so as toarrest the carriage afterit has moved transversely a predetermined distance. The forward tilting of the stop block 20 causes the braking member 24 to turn on its pivot 28, thereby sliding its free end 25 on the escapement frame 6 and thus movinginto engagement with the carriage rod 27 so that when the carriage release mechanism is actuated brake menber 24 immediately applies the brake surface 26 to rod 27 to retard the transverse movement of the carriage so that stop block 20 will not strike with undue force against the tabular stop. It will be further understood that it is immaterial whether or not the carriageis in its upper case shift position since the escapcment frame 6 moves vertically with the carriage and thereby lifts the braking element 24 with it so that the brake will be applied regardless of wliether or not the carriage occupies the lower case position shown in Fig. 6 or the upper case position shown in Fig. 7.

Carriage controlling means comprising: a main frame, a carriage transversely movable with respect to said frame, a carriage escapement and release mechanism, a tabular stop block mounted in an upright position at the rear center of the main frame ends,a tabular stop bar in a plane between mediate means.

Carriage controlling means comprising: a main frame, a carriage transversely movable with respect to said frame and having a lifting and lowering movement for case shifting, an escapement frame vertipendent of the transverse movement thereof, carriage eseapement and release mechanism, a. tabular stop bar on the carriage, a tabular stop block mounted in the main frame for co-acting with the stop bar, a brake element pivotally supported independently of the carriage and having one end resting upon the escapement frame, and means for moving the tabular stop block toward the stop bar and the braking element against a member transversely movable with the carriage when the carriage release mechanism is actuated.
