Description

B. HAWKINS. I Improvementin Cigar-Molds. No. 127,764, PatentedJuneH 1872.
JM. FHUIZJrUTHOGRIP/l/C LY]. M)! (Midi/IE9 PROCESS) its operation.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN HAWKINS, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT l l\l ClGAR-MOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,764, dated J une 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
7 Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HAWKINS, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Cigar-Molds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawfver, hinged to the uprights a a, the lower side being provided with a removable concaveshaped top box, B, secured to the lever by small screws 0 0. Dis a solid steel or metallic gauge, of any form or length required, in which the tobacco used for the filling of the cigar is placed, and guides the top box or plunger B in The rear end of this gauge is provided with a tenon,F, fitting into mortised slat h of the lever A at the hinge, and projects a short distance beyond the uprights, so that as soon as the lever is partially raised this projecting end will come in contact with the platform or base of the machine and serve as a check to the raising of the guide, while the lever, with the top box or plunger attached, is
immediatelyreleased and entirely disengaged. The tenon in the guide D is also horizontally slotted so as to embrace the bolt G, and is held in position by means of a thin plate, 6,
V which is pivoted in said slot by the small pin f. E represents the base or bed plate of the machine; it may have an open longitudinal slot in order to allow the chips or clippings of the tobacco to fall through and thus prevent clogging. This bed-plate and uprights a a are cast in one solid piece.
Fig. 3 represents a hinged receptacle coniposed of wood, which holds the cigar after it is molded, when it is then closed and fastened by a rubberband or cord, andplaced aside for the cigar to dry and mature. A series of these wooden retainers are necessary, as the cigar must be compressed and remain so for a short time to preserve its form. The top-box and guide being thus detachable, any size of mold maybe inserted andremoved at pleasure, using the same press.
By this arrangement all cigars are made of a uniform size, and possess, when molded, a more neat and finished appearance, with less difficulty and expense than can be efi'ected by any other machine now in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the lever A, adjustable top-box or plunger B with the adjustable gauge D and bed-plate E, when arranged, construct ed, and combined substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN HAWKINS.
