W. A. CAMPBELL.
COMBINATION TOOL. APPLICATION FILED AUG.24. me.
1 377,290. Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
INVENTOR coMBiria'rIoN-Toon i resident of North Side, Pittsburgh, in the 1, county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyl-" Vania, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement 1n Combination-Tools, of which the following is a full,"clear, and exact de-\ scription, reference being, had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective viewofoneform of tool,showing the tool blade in'the posn tion when one endfthereof is adapted for a v The front ends of the members 2 are bent toward each other, and pivotally connected i I to the handle between thefront ends thereuse.
Fig. IIII of Fig. 1, showing the tool 1n the reverse position.
Fig. 3 1s a view similar to Fig 2, show- I ing a modified form. I
Fig." 4 is a detail sectional new on a larger scale on the'line IVIV of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a'detail face view of one end of one of the handle members,and Fig.6 is a detail sectional View onthe line VIVI of Fig. 5." v I This invention relates to an improvement in combination tools, and is designed to provide a cheap and efficient device of this character which can'readily be mad'e, and
which can be sold at a very small cost.
One ofthe objects of my invention is to provide a self contained tool which comprises a handle formed-insuch a manner that the handle can be used as a hammer :or tack puller, together with a combination tool pivoted to the handle, which may have at one end a putty knife and at the other end a screw-driver; the tool being provided with one or more slots for secur ng the tool 7 against rotation in either one or both of its positions. The tool is pivoted to the handle by means of an elongated PIVOtiLl member, about which the tool is adapted to rotate when it is desired to shift the tool from one position to another position, and which pivotal member is so arranged that it will enter, either one of the slots to maintain the tool in rigid position with relation to the handle.
Another object of my invention is to reduce the cost of the pivotal 'members by striking up projections on one or both of the handle members on opposite sides of the rivet opening, so that a round rivet can b Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented Application filed. companying drawings, which will now be as defined in In the drawings, the reference character 2, designate the handle members, and
which handle is made from a sheet metal blank bent upon itself, as indicated. at 3.
of is a blade 'membenhaving a screw-driver 4 at one end thereof, while the other end.
a'similar. recess 7, the two sets of recesses being arranged to form a cutter for. cutting wire or similar articles. The heel portion of the handle is provided with a tack pulling recess 8 at one edge thereof, while the other edge is provided with a reinforcing member9 which is adapted to be used as a hammer. i v s Thetool member is provided with a circular opening 10, and extending therefrom is a V-shaped slot member 11 which extends a into the blade portion 5,, as shown in Figs.
2 and 3, and in which the pivotal member. on
the handle is adapted to be seated whenthe blade-5' is tobe used, and which is arranged to retainthe blade in theposition shown in InlFig'. a I have shown similar use;
and in which the blade member tispro-f vided with a similar slotcl2' for retaining Heretofore in all structures of this character known to me, the rivets for securing the ends of the handle to each other and retaining the blade in position were of elongated form, which 7 greatly increased the cost thereof, as it was necessary to machine these Hr the blade inposition when the-end 4: thereof: 'isadapted to be used.
rivets to properly shape them, or to form them in shaping dies.
In the construct on shown in the drawings, the retaining member is formed by presslng out port-ions of the metal Of One or both blade members, as indicated at 13 and 14, on opposite sides of a rivet opening 15. If the metal is pressed- -out on iboth of the members, the amount of displacement of the metal will be equal to approximately one-halfthethicknessof. the blade, so that the memberson the-tool members will form stops to prevent the drawinga p of the rivet 17 to a point Where it would bind the blade sheet metal'blank, said blank beingtfoldedii.

member. If, however, these --.s top projec-;.;-a blade member pivoted-thereto,and arivet tions are only formedr-on oneof thehandle members the amount of displacement of the j projections 1-3- and 15k :would be equal to the. thickness of the blade."
The advantages .of my invention result from .:the provision of a cheap :tool which: '5 is provided-With a tack pulling-recess and a hammer at one endofu the handle,and which is so arranged that noprojections ex-, tend any. appreciable-distance :beyond the outline"of:the.:handle,5.=so-:.that. the device is adaptable to; be placed: in'ia pocket-1, 'Also from the provision ofacompound tool piv-a 2 otally' connected ..to= the. forked end; ofithe'.
handle; and- Whieh-Yis arranged to be rotated and securely :lockedin zoneor. both positions a Without the use of springs ior auxiliary de-w vices to maintain the blade-1n fixed .POSltlOIl with relationlto the handle. Furthermore;
from the provision of means for forming the pivotal member by stamping projections: ofgeneral V-shap'e in one oftheimembers, Which are arranged toseat inV-shaped recesses in the other membeig for :retaining the 4 blade'in a fixed position With relation to the handle. i
It will be readily understood-by those familiar with the art that, "if-desired, the projections mightbe formed on the blade memberand a key-slotformed in one of the handle members. v
This application forms a continuationin part of -my application Serial No. 83,058, filed Mai-ch 9, 1916.
I claim:- i p I 1. A device of the character described,
