Description

H. M. MANSAGER.
COMBINED WHIP SOCKET AND REIN HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 17, i918- Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
I-IOIEF M. MANSAGEB, or ooLroiv, SOUTH DAKOTA.
COMBINED WHIP-SOCKET AND REIN-I-IOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented Aug. 2'7, 1918.
Application filed April 17, 1918. Serial No. 229,158.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Horn M. MANsAcER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colton, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Nhipasockets and Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve- Inents in combined whip sockets and rein holders and it is an object of the invention Lo provide a device of this general character which may be readily and conveniently applied in operative position and which will perform its desired functions in an effective manner.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved whip socket and rein holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a combined whip socket and rein holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the device as herein embodied;
Fig. 3 is a view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. l is a sectional view illustrating a modified form of my invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing B denotes a substantially U-shaped body which has its side members 1 of a considerable width. The body B is adapted to straddle the upper edge of a side or end wall of a wagon body and one of the side members 1 of the body has struck therefrom the transversely disposed tongues 2 which are adapted to afford resilient or spring means for maintaining the body B in applied position. It is preferred that the tongues 2 be alternately arranged with their free extremities oppositely disposed.
If preferred, however, the tongues 2 may be outwardly directed as illustrated in Fig. 1 to be suitably engaged with the socket S for maintaining said socket in appliedposition.
As illustrated in Fig. 1 the side member 1 provided with the tongues 2 has secured thereto by the rivets 3 or the like the socket S for the butt portion of a whip. The socket S is cylindrical in form with its opposite ends open. Struck from the member 1 with which the socket S is engaged and at a point below the socket is an outstanding wing 5 which is disposed substantially at right-angles to the side member 1 and which serves substantially as a closure for the lower end of the socket and upon which the butt of a whip inserted within the socket S is adapted to rest.
The side members 1 of the body B possess a certain degree of inherent resiliency and said members 1 are provided with alining openings 6 through which bolts or other suitable members may be directed in order that the body B may be effectively clamped or secured to the various types of agricultural machines or similar structures.
The lower portion of the second side member 1 is provided with an extension 7 returned to overlie the outer face of said second side member 1. The returned extension or tongue serves as a clip to receive and hold the reins when said reins are not in use.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a whip socket and rein holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be. assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention iii practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped body having its side portions resilient, one of said side arms being provided with a returned extension to afford a rein holding clip, and a whip socket carried by the second side arm of the U-shaped body, one of said side members having tongues struck therefrom.
2. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped body having its side portions resilient, one of said side arms being provided with a returned extension to afford a rein holding clip, and a Whip socket carried by the secondside arm of the U-shaped body, one of said side members having tongues struck therefrom, said tongues being alternately disposed in reverse directions, and extending transversely of the side member.
Copies at this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 3. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped body having its side portions resilient, one of said side arms being provided with a returned extension to afiord a rein holding clip, and a Whip socket carried by the second side arm of the U-shaped body, the side arm with which the socket coacts having tongues struck therefrom, said tongues serving to hold the socket in applied position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of .tWo itnesses.
