BY M j@ WILLIAM HENRY HOLBROOK, SR., OF VENICE, ILLINOIS.
NAIL.
specicaition of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 191s.
Application filed October 26, 1916. Serial No. 127,740.
T all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, VVHAJAM l'l. HoL- Bnoon, Sr., a citizen of the United States, Hresiding at Venier` 4in the county ot Madi- 5 son and State of Illinois, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Nails, y of which the follolwiinglrl is a specification.
This inveutimi relates to certain new and useful 4i1nprovements iu nails, the peculiari ties of whit-h will be hereinafter described inthe specification and 'particularly pointed out in the claim.
"lhe object of my invention is to provide a style of nail that is adapted to serve the usual purpose of a nail but in addition theret'o ma)v he readily.removed and used repeat edly', thereby rendering it esperiallyl appliealilr for use in srall'oldingr or other oonstruetion ot a moreI or lessl temporary charaeter.l
In `the aerompanyiug drawing on' which like reference letters indicate eorresponding parts,
lligure l is a side elevation ot the mam body port ion ol anail'construrted in accordy:mee with the present, invention.
Fig. 2 is a :similar view with the .supple nuiutiil head member in plare` the main body `portion 4ofthe nail being shown in dott-ed lines.
"Fig 3 is a side elevation of 'a slightly modified 'loru'i of supplemental head mein-- behoud,
'Fight is a transversesection on the line :i: of the construction illustrated in Fig. 3. `fli-.eferriug .to-'the drawings. wherein like refr-renee characters deeignate correspondinggparts throughout the several views. designates thebody portion of the nail are tierably constructed of round wire. The indy portion 2 is suitably pointed at one end and at its opposite end is providedwitgh andnte headll.
et designates afsupplement-al head .member adapted -to fit. over-the body of the nail with onefeud thereon"l engagin the under face of .thdintegral `head 3 to orm a shoulder below said integral-head 3.
'Ihesupplemental head'i, is provided ,with
a. reduced'portion or ne'ek 5 intermediate its Vends to rolde' for the engagement, ofthe claw o'a h nner or other 'drawing means the nail. This outer end faceoiE4 the supplemental head rnember is adapted to act rompressively onf, the Wood or other material beneath the ihtegral head 3 for'withdrawing into vwhieh the nail is driven home, in the same manner as the head of an .ordinary nail but said supplemental head member 4 performs the additional `function ,of main- 80 taining the integral head 43 -in a slightl raised position frointlle surface of the wood' orother material, to permit the engagement of a elawhammer or similar tool therewith so that the nail can be readily withdrawn.
The body portion 2 of the head is pro-` yided with an exteriorly disposed angulally fared part (i :'rdjaoent the integral head 3, and the supplemental head member el` has a body part rereivinglr opening extending 70 centrally and longitudinally thereof and of' a size and shape eorresliionding to the shape in cross' section o't' the angularly fared portion of the body part, the supplemental head member Jr I'Jeing,r adapted to fit upon 75 t-he'anfgulaily faced portion ofthe body part E? withone end tace litting against the un der 'fare of the integral head 3. The re` duced portion or neck 5 of the supplemental head meuiber l has an angularly shaped outer face for the lengagement of the claw or other d rawing tool, this construction prt. riding tor turning' and looseI-ling of the nail in the withdrawing operation.
In Figs. 3 and 4 of the Adrawingis illus- 85 trated a slightly modilied form of supplemental head member. The construction illustrated in these figures is the samehoW- ever as vthat shown in Fig. 2, with the exception that. in vthis instance' 'the supple- 9 0 mental head member has enlarged portions at both ends thereof' instead of only at its lowerrnd isin the Construction Figs. l und 2.
For temporary houses for camps of Work- .95
ing' crews, and for sea-Holding, concrete forms. and other construction, that are sub# jeet to more than one erection and removal, my style of nail tends to ai'oid splitting und .waste of .lumber and other material with which it. is used, lessons the labor olfwreek-` ing, and redures the cost'of construct-ions.
Having-thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: y, i
A nail comprising, a body hart provided at. one end V'with ahead orniiled integrally therewith having en an ularly faced portion adj ,nt said heed, 'inlcombination y with'a sepelio q formed siippl'lhmental head 110` member adapted to bedetaohbly engaged. with saidbodypart, the supplemental heed supplemental head member intermediu'te'its ends being reduced in thickness und shaped to provide un exteriorly. disposed ungulurly 15 faced claw engaging portion with shouldersv at opposite ends thereof.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
