' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS PAYMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roving Cutters or Strippers, of which the follow ing is a specification.

This invention relates to a roving cutter or stripper, designed for the purpose of cutting or stripping the roving from the bobbin, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient term of device which may be employed for uickly cuttin or stripping the roving away rom the bob in without injury to either bobbin or operator, and without causing waste of roving.

The invention consists of the features of combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 1s a perspective view looking toward the face side of the cutter or stripper.

Fig. 2 is a similar view looking toward the opposite side thereof.

Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the cutting or striEping operation.

In t e drawings the numeral 4 deslgnates a handle, and 3 is a tang entering the end of the handle and secured along its axis in any appropriate manner. This tang stands at an obtuse angle to the shank of a hookshaped guard, and by preference both the tang and the hook are made of fiat material such as sheet metal of such thickness as will give the device the necessary rigidity. As shown, the projecting end of the tang is continued into ally into the shank 1 of the hook at the inner end of said shank and the outer end thereof is curved aroun into a bill 2 whose ti is pointed and incurved, and the throat oi the hook opens on a line oblique to the axis of the handle. Lying flat against one face of the hook is the substantially rectangular body 7 of a blade or cutter, which is by preference provided with a longitudinal slot 10 through which passes a screw 9 whose tip engages a threaded hole in the bend of the hook as best seen in Fig. 2, and the body of this blade lies across the bend of the hook with the slot preferably disposed on a line along the direction in Specification of Letters Patent.

The inner or forward end of the llne and beveled to produce a cutting edge 8, the projecting portion edge lies against said bill 2, while the rearmost portion or heel overlies the shank. his is the normal position of the blade, but by means of the slot and set screw the blade may be longitudinally and pivotally shifted to adjust its cutting edge with relation to the throatof the hook to adapt the device for an effective cutting action upon roving threads varying in depth or thickness, as well as to provide for the use of blades of difierent lengths and different thicknesses, as circumstances may require.

In the use of the device, the handle 4 is held in one hand of the operator and the hooked end of the uard, which projects slightly in advance 0? the toe of the cutting edge 8, is hooked under the roving at one end of the bobbin. The tool is then drawn longitudinally toward the opposite end of the bobbin, the guard hook engaging and pulling out the threads which are severed y the cutting blade with a draw cut away from the face of the bobbin, which the roving may be cut from the bobbin without injury to the bobbin or liability of cutting or otherwise inuring the operator. At the same time the lade cuts the roving in a clean and positive manner, thus avoiding excess waste thereof.

I claim a A device of the character described comprising a handle, a su porting member sei and formed as a flat plate cut away to provide a hook at its terminal portion, the bill of the hook bein pointed and directed toward the handle an its opening being inclined in'respeot to the handle, a blade disposed upon said hook member slot, and a screw passing through saidslot an into the hook, whereby said blade is pivotally and slidably adjustable upon said plate forming the hook,'the cutting edge of said blade being'inclined, the adjustability of said blade permitting its toe to be disposed adjacent the point of the hook and its cutting edge extending diagonally across the opening in the hook.
