Application led October 31, 1917. Serial No. 199,485.
' To all whom z' may concern.'
oa citizen of the United States,
rangement of Be it known that I, GEORGE E. H. NELSON, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a lfull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful toy or novelty and has for its main object to provide one embodying an upright frame in the form of a ladder having alternately arranged stops on its sides, and a iigure having outstretched arms which may be a representation of any well known public or popular character, said gure -when positioned at the top of the .trame being adapted when started to descend by gravity, alternately swinging from side to side in its descent.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive toy and one which will aiiord a great deal of amusenient.v
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention lcomprises the various novel features of construction, combination and arparts as will be fully described hereinafter and afterward specically claimed.
Referring to the drawings: I
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the toy, showing a figure supported at the to thereof,
ig. 2 is a similar view showing the manner in which the figure descends, and
Fig. 3 is a side `elevation of the upright frame of the toy.
Similar characters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the accompanying drawings and the following description.
ln order that the construction and. operation of the invention may be readily understood, l have illustrated an approved einbodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings and will now proceed to fully describe the same in connection with said drawings, in which l indicates an upright frame, -which in this instance is in the form of a ladder and embodies the usual side bars 2 connected by rungs 3. rihe ladder is adapted to be su ported in an upright position by a pair of egs 4 pivotall connected at their upper ends to the side ars of the ladder as indicated at 5.
.Each side bar is provided longitudinally withspaced stop pins 6, the stop pins on one side bar being arranged alternately with thespaces between the stop pins on the opposite side bar.
One side bar has a ranged on it opposite pin .on the opposite side in horizontal alinement therewith.
6 indicates a gravity descending ligure which may be made or designed to indicate any well known public or popular character and is provided with outstretched arms 9 extending oppositely in horizontal alineinent.
Referring to Fig. l, it will be seen that the supporting pin 7 cooperates with the uppermost stop pin 6 to support the figure at the top of the ladder by its outstretched arms. In the operation of the toy, the left hand arm is moved outwardly and disengaged from the supporting pin 7 and then allowed to drop, whereupon the arm will fall upon the stop pin 6 immediately below the supporting pin 7. The ligure will then slide downwardly by gravity in the position indicated by dotted lines until the outer end of the right arm of the figure disengages the .uppermost stop pin 6 which is opposite the supporting pin 7.
As soon as the right arm of the figure has disengaged the uppermost stop pin 6 and the body of the figure engages the next lower stop pin, it will swing downwardly upon the nextl lower stop pin 6, as clearly indicated in' Fig. 2. When the figure is swung down to the dotted dicated in Fig. 2, it will slide downwardly on the stop pins until the arm of the figure leaves/ the uppermost stop pin supporting it and the body of the ligure engages the next lower stop pin, whereupon the ligure will alternately swing on this latter stop pin and continue its downward gravity descent.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be apparent that when the figure is once started downwardly from the top of the ladder, it will continue to descend until it ,reaches the bottom of the ladder, alternately swinging from side to side in its descent.
supporting pin 7 arthe uppermost stop' bar and is disposed line position in` end of the left
