a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Waste-Container, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a waste holder, and more particularly to the class of waste containers for journal boxes.

The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a container of this character, wherein the waste or packing will be prevented from displacement, either longitudinally or laterally therein with the journal, thus minimizing the heating of the latter, and at the same time, retaining the lubricant in said box, which lubricant ordinarily becomes lost by dropping out from the rear of the journal box, the container being designed to grip the bottom of the box, so as to hold it fixed, thereby avoiding the shifting of the waste or packing which ordinarily results in the same getting between the bearings and journal, with the resultant heating of the latter and the Wearing of said journal and bearings.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a container of this character, wherein the construction thereof permits its use in various types of journal boxes, and also with those which have been in use, the construction of the container being novel in form to assure the .proper circulation of a lubricant, such as oil, and beneath the container is afforded a chamber for free oil, which by capillary attraction shall be drawn up through the waste, and thence on to the journal for its lubrication, after which such oil will again gravitate beneath the container for further circulation.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a container of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient, in its purpose, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein likeparts are designated by similar numerals of reference throughout the several views, A designates a portion of an integral journal box casting of the ordinary well known construction and design, having in its rear end the usual transversely extending dust guard chamber 10, adapted to accommodate the dust guard, not shown, for encirclingthe bearing 11, of the axle 12, formed with the journal 13, projecting into the rear end of the journal box A, and provided on its extremity with the usual axle collar 14. Within the journal box A, and working against the journal 13 at its upper side between the bearing 11 and the collar 14, is the usual journal brass or bearing 15, held in place by the key 16, in the usual well known manner, while upon the bottom of the journal box A, is the waste container, hereinafter fully described.

The waste container comprises a rectangular shaped plate 17, preferably made from sheet metal, and is dished or concave in cross section to conform to the shape of the bottom of the journal box A, while marginally of this plate 17, is an outwardly and downwardly curved continuous flange 18, which rests upon the bottom of the journal box A to elevate the plate 17, a distance from said bottom, for' forming an oil chamber' 19 therebetween, for a purpose presently described.
