Description

JOHN H. VAN DEVENTER, 0F YONKERS, NEW YORK.
"' 2 ,l EQUIPMENT-INDEX.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, i918.
Application filed J une 27, 1917. Serial No. 177,241.
To all whom t may concern."
Be it known that I, JOHN H. VAN DnvnNTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Equipment-Indexes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention which constitutes the subject matter of this application relates to an equipment index, the purpose of which is to provide in a technical, trade or engineering publication of one or more pages, a means by which each subscriber may form a perpetually up to date card index of equipment or other material and information.
Technical publications, especially in the machinery building field, make a practice of publishing for the benefit of their readers, a description of each new machine or device put upon the market. The practice heretofore has been to treat this, in the pages of these publications, as ordinary reading matter. No attempt, so far as I am aware, has therefore been made to provide for clipping or otherwise severing this information for a. card index system, as ordinarily the descriptions vary in length, for example, from a short notice of a few lines to several pages.
The drawing accompanying this specification illustrates, somewhat diagrammatically, one form which the device may take. In de.- tail the reference numeral lO designates one or more unit information sheets or areas contained in the journal in which it is published, and it will of course be understood that the size and number of these sheets is a matter of choice of the publisher and that one sheet of standard size may be placed upon a page and the remainder of the page devoted to other matter. The pages, upon which these sheets are contained, are preferably scored, as indicated at l1, so that each sheet may readily be severed. Each sheet contains a unit description, that is condensed and standardized as to space occupied, so that it may be cut out or severed, pasted upon a card of uniform size and tiled in a uniform card index system. As a matter of practice. the material printed upon the re- ,verse side of the sheets will be of such a nature as not to be technical information7 or other important matter which would 0bviate the desire of a reader to preserve it.
."With few exceptions, back copies of technical journals become lost or destroyed, and hence the record of new machinery or other material capable of being condensed and standardized as to description is of small value, as at present published. My invention enables the engineering, mechanical and other professions to have an available means of preserving this material in small space, and keeping it perpetually up to date. And it will be seen that in providing a condensed and standardized or unit description of each subject the material may be led awa-y according to any desired classication. Of course it will be understood that in lieu of being scored, the areas or sheets7 may contain perforations, guide lines or other indications for severing the same from the magazine. And it will be further understood that these areas or sheets may contain any desired information, such as an illustration of a machine, tool or device, the date of issue of said publication, the name of said machine, tool or device, the name and address of the maker of said machine, tool or device, the purpose, capacity and weight of said machine, the principal dimensions and floor space occupied, etc.
What I claim is:
l. In a device of the class described, page of a publication of a magazine type, means for sizing and bounding one or more portions on said page less than its full size to cause them to conform in shape and dimensions to a card index file, informative indicia on each of said portions relating to distinct subject-matter whereby the portions may be separated on the boundary lines and each adapted to be led with its appropriate subject-matter in the card index lile.
In a device of the class described, a page of a publication of a magazine type, means for sizing and bounding by markings one or more portions of said page less than its full size to cause them to conform in shape and dimensions to a card index file, informative indiciaconsisting of an illustration and accompanying description on each of said portions rela-ting to distinct subject-matter whereby the portions may be sepamted cli the bcundai'y line and each adapted to be filed Wih its appropiinte subject matter ita the czid index Ele.
3. in a, device ci the dass described, :i page of i publication of a magazine type9 means for sizing md bounciing by weakened lines one oi" more pozions O' said page ess than its full size to cause tbem to conform in Shape and dimensicns tc si card index file.,
@mies infoi'niative indicia consisting of an illusl@ tration and accompanying desciiption on each ci said poiions @relating tc distinct subject; Vinatef'Wbeieby tbefporticns may be separated on tbe boundary lines and each adapted to be bled with its appropriate subject-niziier in the cnid index le.
n testimony whereof affix my signature.
