IMPROVEMENT IN STEREOTYPE-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,512, dated June 4, 1872.
Specification describing anew and useful Improvement in Adjustable Stereotype-Blocks, invented by WILLIAM A. PINNELL, of the city, county, and State of New York.
Figure 1 is a top view of a stereotype-block illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the line a0 :17, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of the key for removing and inserting the screw-hooks. Fig. 4. is a side view of the tool for operating the swiveled screws.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved block for stereotype-plates, which shall be so constructed as to avoid the loss oftime now unavoidable in making up a form of plates on a printing-press, on account of the irregularity in the thickness of th e plates, which has to be corrected by underlaying with paper or card, by taking each separate plate from its the heads of which have teeth formed in them,
and are turned by means of a toothed blade, E. If the plates are small, the screw-hooks F are screwed into holes in the plates G, which are let into the face of the block A, several holes being formed in the said plates G for the said screw-hooks F, to enable them to be adjusted according to the size of the plates. The plate is pressed up against the screw-hooks F by the clamps O. The screw -ho0lrs F are screwed in and out with the key G. H are wedges, placed upon inclines formed upon the lower side of the four corners of the block A, and which are moved out and in by swiveled screws D, similar to the swiveled screws that operate the clamps O, and which are swiveled in slots in the plates attached to the edges of the block A.
By this construction the plates may be leveled up by moving the wedges in or out by turning the screws D in one or the other direction. If the blocks A are large, more than four wedges may be used, some of the screws D being made long so that one screw may operate two wedges.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The adjustable screw-hooks F, in combination with the block A and adjustable screwclamps O D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of ad justable wedges H with inclines formed upon the under side of the block A, and swiveled screws D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM A. PINNELL.
