WITNESS; INVENTOR.
-4 A TTORNEYS citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda andchosen 0. JENSEN, or QAKLAND, oa'mron ma.
ooms cons'rnnc'rroiv- FOR havens.
Application filed February 13,1918. Serial No. 216,968.
i To all whom it'may concern:
Be it 'known that I, Gnonsn G. JENSEN, a
State ofCalifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Constructions for Levers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved lock for gear shift levers of motor vehicles wherein a simple construction is provided the form of a longitudinally movable locking bolt, and which is adapted for engaging a portion of the lever to lock the same from operative movement. The invention is illustrated in the form of a unit construction for attachment to a lever case or gear-case housing, and when in. locked. position being prevented from removal therefrom, while in its released position it .iscapable of ready detachment.
jHowever, the construction maybe formed icdirectly in the lever easing or in the gear case housing. When constructed as a unit may improved locking device is capable of attachment to levers of any well known construction by providing an opening in the casing thereof in such position that "the look- ;ing bolt carried'by the unit is capable of engagement with the lever to lock the same from operation when projected through such opening. By my construction I unit capable of being manufactured at little cost and designed for ready attachment to a lever casing or gear case housing, and when attached forming a part thereof, the construction being capable ofbeing in locked and unlocked position relative to the lever while remaining attached to its support. To more fully comprehend the invention,
reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a view in vertical section of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. i
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference, designate corresponding parts,
1 indicates a suitable lever casing provided,
in its upper wall 2 with the lever guide slots 3 connected by the transverse selective slot 4. In the illustration a gear case housing 5 is shown as connected to the lever casing '55 1 and said housing is provided with a port or opening 6 having a threaded wall.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
provide. a locking casing 1 and the gear cas1ng'5 is a suitable and in this construction the same is designed for ooiiperation with the vehicle brakes, not shown.
Extending through the dividingwall 8 between the housing 1 and gear case housing 5 is a tubular sleeve 9 fulcrumed on the shaft 7, and said sleeve carries at one end the operating lever 10 extending upwardly through the casing 1 and guided in its operative. and selective movement by the slots 3 and 4. The other end of said sleeve 9 connects with the gear element shifting hub 11 from which depends the gear element shifting arm 12, said arm'being preferably dis posed downwardly in the gear case ,5 and cooperating in any suitable manner With the gear elements therein. I
The hub 11 is designed to lie below the opening 6 and is provided with a recess 13 adapted when the lever 10 is in alinement with the selective s1ot 4 to lie below the opening 6-for engagement by the lower end Patented Aug. c, 1918.
shaft 7 preferably mounted to axially rotate of alongitudinal movable locking bolt 14 carried-by a bore 15 in a locking bolt casing I 16 adapted for screw threaded attachment at its lower end in the opening 6. The bolt 14 is of a length to project beyond the ends of the bore 15 and is normally forced outwardly by ,a coil spring 17 heated in the groove 18 in the side thereof, said sprin being held under compression at its lower end by a guide pin 18 threaded into the casing 16 and projecting into the groove 18, said pin preventing axial rotation of the bolt 14 is said bore and limiting. the upward the'casing 15'from removal from the open- I .ing 6 and at the same time looking the lever from movement. A transverse recess 20 is formed in the locking bolt 14 and within the same is adapted for-rece tion the tongue 05 l ngitudinal move-dc bolt locking pin 22 positioned within a bore 23 formed preferably at right angles to and communieating at its outer end with the bore 15.
A spring 24 is mounted in the bore 23 in rear of the bolt locking pin 22 and forces the same outwardly for engagement with the locking bolt 14:. l
A suitable recess 25 is formed in the side wall of the bolt locking pin 22 and into the same projects a finger 26 dis osed eccentrically of a rotatable locking barrel 2'7 positioned within a casing 28, said barrel being controlled by the rotation of a suitable key 29 adapted for insertion withinthe barrel spring 17 will 28. A suitable gasket 30 is interposed between the meeting surfaces of the locking bolt casing 16 and the wall of the gear case surrounding the opening 6 to insure a tight connection between the two with the. bolt 14:
inalinementwith the ofl'set portion 19 of the opening.
It will be apparent that on the release of the bolt locking pin from the groove 20, the automatically raise the bolt 14 and permit of movement-of the lever 10,
or if it is so desired the casing 16- may at this time be removed from the gear case. 5. On depressing the bolt 14: when the lever is positioned as in Fig. 1 of the drawings, with the recess 13 below the :lower end of thebolt 14:, the'lower end of the bolt will first pass through the oflset portion 19 of the opening 6 thereby locking the casing 16 within the opening 6 and will subsequently be received in the recess 13 looking the lever from movement. I
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as, new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a lever casing, a
lever movably mounted'therein and capable of selective and operative movementin different planes, a locking casing for detachably securing to the lever casingthrough an openingtherein, said locking casing provided with an open ended locking bolt guide, a longitudinally movable foot actuated locking bolt mounted in said guide and of a length to pro ect at its opposite ends beyond the open ends of said guide, the inner portion thereof adapted for. engaging with a portion of saidlever within said lever casing ltO llock the .lever from operative movement therein, said locking bolt provided in its side wall with a transverse groove, aspring pressed bolt locking pin carried by said locking casing and provided I with an elongated tongue for engaging with .in the transverse groove within said locking bolt to retain the same in looking engagenentwith said lever, akey controlled looking meohanlsm coepera-ting with said pin and capable of operation for withdrawing the same from engagement with said bolt, and a spring for removingsaid locking bolt outer end movement comprising a locking casing for detachably securing within said'opening, a member carried thereby for cotiperating with the lever to lock the same from operative movement, and a lock controlled device carried by said lock casing for engaging said member to retain the same in locked position relative to the lever, said locking casing being locked from removal from said opening whcn said member is in locked position relative to said lever.
3. In combination with a lever casing, a lever mounted therein and capable of selective and operative movement in difierent planes, said casing provided with an opening adjacent said lever, mechanism for locle ing said lever from movement comprising a lock controlled member carried within a casing for detachably securing to said lever casing through said opening, said lock controlled member adapted for engaging and locking the lever from movement and locking its casing from removal from said lever casing when in said locking position.
