Description

VwlLLlAM H. DowNlNG.
Gauge-iCock.
Patented June 4,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. DOWN ING, OF SHAMBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PETER MORRIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAUGE-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,468, dated June 4, 1872.
Specifications describing cert-aiu Improvements in Gauge-Cocks, invented by WILLIAM H. DOWNING, of Shamburg, in the county of Venaugo and State of Pennsylvania.
My invention relates to an improvement in gauge-cocks, by the use of which their packing may be adjusted from time to time, as it wears away, without requiring its frequent removal and renewal, as in the cocks now in use.
Figure 1 represents alongitudinal section ot' a gauge-cock, showing my arrangement of parts; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line X Y.
A represents the shell of a boiler, into which the body B of the cock is inserted. O is a small pipe or steam-orifice of smaller internal diameter than the outer end of the body, and arranged to form a valve-seat. This may be formed by securing a piece of small pipe within the body, as shown, or in any convenient way by which the same result is obtained. D is a hollow valve-stem screwing into the outer end of the body B. E is a cylindrical-shaped packing, of rubber or other material, placed within the inner end of the valve-stem D and closing against the steam-orifice or pipe C. F is a screw-packin g stem, screwed into the outer end of the valve-stem D and pressing against and holding the packing E in place. G is a steam outlet-pipe. The valve and packingstems D and F are provided with handles I I and I, of wood or other non-conductor ot' heat, for the convenient grasping and manipulation of said stems. The opening and closing of the steam-orifice O is effected by turning the valvestem D, which carries with it the packing-stem F and packing E. Vhenever the inner end of the packing becomes worn away it may be pressed forward or fed7 up to its seat by screwing in the packing-stem F, which is only used for this purpose. A stop-cock, J, is shown in the drawing between the boiler-sheet and steam-outlet of the cock. This may or may not be used, but, as it is common to many gauge-cocks, it forms no part of my improvements.
I do not claim, broadly, the elastic packing E, nor the adjusting screw-stem F, as they are already in use in other gauge-cocks; but
I claim as my invention- The described arrangement and combination ot' the body B, steam-orifice or pipe C, steam'- outlet G, hollow valve-stem D, screw packingstem F, and packing E, operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM H. DOWN ING.
