Description

C. H. MELVIN & J. P. SEAHOLM.
ROLLING COLTER AND JOINTER. APPLICATION FILED NOV-6,1916- 1 ,273,898. Patented July 30, 1918.
12 G lntranlm r's UNITED s'r 'rEs i PATENT OFFICE. 7
CHARLES H. MELVIN AND JOHN P. SEAHOLM, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO DEERE AND COMPANY, OF MOLIN E, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ROLLING COLTER AND JOIN'IER.
Application filed November 6, 1916 Serial No. 129,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatwe, OHARLnsH. MELVIN and JOHN P. SEAHOLM, citizens of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Colters and J ointers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to plows and more particularly to a combination'rolling colter and jointer therefor,-and the object of our invention is to provide devices named which can be readily attached to a. plow, which have a simultaneous laterally swinging movement, and the j ointer laterally and vertically adjustable.
Referring to the drawings in which similar numerals indicate identical parts Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation taken from the opposite side of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view, and
Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line H of Fig. 3.
A portion of a plow beam 1 is shown on which is a holder 2, preferably a casting, for a standard 3 which passes through two eyebolts 4, the latter extending through the holder 2, above and below the beam 1 and through a strap 5 common to both eyebolts, suitable nuts on the ends of the eyeholts serve to draw the latter and the standard 3 against the holder and secure them rigidly in position.
The standard 3 is preferably cranked at its lower end having a portion 6 rearward of and parallel with the main body thereof.
On the portion 6 is loosely mounted a yoke 7 having a horizontal slot to admit a split collar 8 on the portion 6 and which is rigidly secured thereon by a bolt 9 through lugs 10 integral with the collar 8; it is evident that while the yoke 7 is supported on the portion 6 by the collar 8, it is free to swing laterally.
A disk colter 11 is revolubly mounted on an axle 12 secured to the ends of the arms of the yoke.
Extending through yoke 7from side to side, and adjacent the forward end thereof, we provide a circular opening 13 to form a bearing for a lateral portion 14 of a rear- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented uly 3Q,
wardlyextending arm lo on the rear end of which is rigidly secured a jointer16. The
upper side of the lateral portion vlet is fiattened and against thisfiattened surface two set screws 17 and 18 are adapted to operate;
the set screw 17 operating-through a thread ed opening in the yoke? rearward of the axis of the lateral portion l-t of thejointer arm 15, and the set screw 18 operating through a similar opening forward of said axis.
Vhen the setscrews 17-and 18 are turned against'the flattened surface of the lateral portion 14 the jointer arm is securely held against either lateral or vertical adjustment,
by loosening both set screws however the lateral portion 14 is movable in or out of the opening 13, consequently moving the j ointer toward or from the colter 11, after which the set screws are again tightened to. hold the j ointer securely in place.
It is often necessary to vertically adjust the jointer to regulate the depth of its operation, this is readily accomplished in the following manner: if for instance, it is dedirection and lift the jointer and arm 15 Q turning the portion 14 to follow the withdrawal of the set screw 17, and when the desired adjustment has been made both set screws are again tightened to secure the jointer in place.
In the Vertical adjustment of the jointer the portion 14 of the arm 15 forms the pivot,
turning in the opening 13, by which the jointer is raised or lowered, and by lateral adjustment of the portion 14 the arm 15 and jointer thereon are moved toward or from the colter 11, combining in this construction the faculty of adjustment either vertically or laterally by operation of the same parts.
What we claim is 1. A combined rolling colter and jointer 7 including a support for the colter, a laterally extending bearing in said support, an arm on which the jointer is mounted, sald arm extending rearwardly and having its forward portion bent laterally and pivotally supported in said bearing, a flattened surface on said forward portion within the bearing, and a plurality of set screws operating on said flattened surface, whereby the jointer arm can be adjusted vertically to varying positions.
2. A combined rolling colter and jointer including a support for the colter, a laterally extending bearing in said support, an arm on which the jointer is mounted, said 'arm extending rearwardly and having its forward portion bent laterally and pivotally supported in said bearing, a flattened surface on said forward portion within the bearing, and a plurality of set screws operating on said flattened surface and on opposite sides of the axis of said forward portion, whereby the jointer arm can be adjusted vertically to varying positions.
3. A combined rolling colter and jointer including a support for the colter, a later- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ally extending bearing in said support, an arm on whlch the ointer is mounted, said arm extending rearwardly and having its forward portion bent laterally and pivotally supported in said bearing, a flattened surface on said forward portion within the bearing, a set screw in the colter support and contacting with said flattened surface forward ofthe axis of said forward portion, and a second set screw in the colter support and contacting with said flattened surface rearward of said axis, said set screws adapted to be operated to adjust the jointer arm vertically and to retain it in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
