Description
UNITED STATES PATEN onnion;
JOHN HOCHBERGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO LILLIAN J. HOCHBEBGER, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACI-IING MEANS FOR BIBS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 30, 1918.
Application filed June 8, 1917. Serial No. 173,609.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HOOHBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Means for Bibs, of which the following is a speci fication.
The present invention relates broadly to improvements in plumbing fittings, its primary object being to provide novel means for attaching bibs to laundry trays or tubs.
To best obtain an understanding of the advantages of the invention, it may be stated that these trays which are generally of granitine or soapstone, are provided with a relatively large opening or openings through which the plumber makes connection for the bibs with the water supply pipes. In order to hold the connection in its proper place, it is customary to drive a wooden wedge or block in the opening, but this is extremely unsatisfactory owing to the fact that through shrinkage or accident the wedge becomes displaced, leaving the plumbing in unsuitable condition, conducive to leaks. 1th such arrangements, it is not unusual, inasmuch as trays of this character are seldom provided with overflows, when the water is allowed to fill the trays as high as the bib, for the water to leak past the bib and onto the floor.
It is to overcome these difiiculties and dis advantages that I have conceived this invention which consists of a coupling member provided with clamping means and a retaining element through the instrumentality of which a filler disposed about the connection with the bib in the wall of the tray is positively held in place.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through an embodiment of the invention, and showing its application;
Fi 2 is a view in elevation of the coupling mem Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of a slightly modified form ofthe coupling; and
Fig. 4 is a simllar view showing a different type of pipe connection for one end of the coupling member.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawing, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to Fig. 1, the reference character 1 designates the rear wall of a laundry tray through which the customary opening 2 is provided. At one side of this wall is disposed the conventional bib 3 having the annular flange 3, the said bib being connected to the pipe line 4; by the special means now to be described.
At 5 is denoted a-coupling member, the extremities of which are preferably threaded, one to connect with the bib and the other to connect with the pipe line 4: through the union 6. Centrally the coupling is prefer-' ably enlarged and externally threaded to receive the clamping nut 7, which coacts with a large washer 8 loosely surrounding the coupling, to impart clamping action to the bib. The washer 8 is sufficiently large to cover the opening 2 in the wall of the tray and in connecting up the fitting this opening is filled with putty or other plastic material which holds the connection in central position against movement and makes the tray leak proof at this point.
It will readily be understood that this coupling member 5 may be made in vdif' either end and threaded for connection with constituting a mold form for one side of the bib and Water supply line, the relatively the plastic material, and means on said coularge central portion of said coupling mempling member for holding the Washer in 10 her being also threaded, a plastic filler disposition retaining the plastic material in the 5 posed in the tray opening surrounding the opening.
