ELBERT C. OWENS., OF OTTAWA, KANSAS,
FIGURE TOY.
Specification of Letters/Patent.
Patented July a, 191s.
Application filed March 9, 19,17. Serial No. 153,635.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT C. OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as games and toys and more particularly relates to improvements in fig ure toys.
As the primary aim and obj ect the present invention contemplates the provision of novel means for actuating jointed figures so that during the actuation thereof the bodies of the figures will be moved up and down to consequently impart a movement to the jointed legs and arms thus causing the figures to dance.
It is an additional object of this invention to provide an operating mechanism of the type described that is of such a construction that it may be readily housed in' a small casing or box-like structure which may be provided with advertising matter, the moving toys being designed to direct attention to the matter besides being of such aA nature More particularly the present invention consists in the provision of actuating means for the jointed figures embodying reciprocating supporting means as well as means forl transmitting Va rotary movement to a vertical rocking movement to consequently reciprocate the supporting means.
Still further improvements of this invention consist in the provision of means for supporting and guiding the reciprocating rods which are connected to the dolls or other jointed figures and cushioning means for preventing noise while the reciprocatory movement is being imparted to the rod.
Among the other aims `and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number ofparts are few, the construction simple, the cost ofproduction Vlow and the efficiency high.
Other objects las well; as thenature, characteristic features and scope of this inventionwill'be more readily-apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and ating means.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings I provide a casing or box-like structure A which is preferably of a rectangular configuration and is especially adapted for receiving advertising matter. For instance it may be constructed to resemble a cigar box and in this manner be used for advertising purposes. Of course however it is not necessary thatadvertising matter be applied to the casing.
Disposed above the top of the box are figures 1 and 2 of dolls having jointed arms 3 pivotally connected thereto and jointed legs 4t pivoted to the body while feet 5 may be jointed to the lower ends of the legs.
Vertically arranged rods 6 have their upper ends connected to the bodies of the figures 1 and 2 and are slidably mounted in the top of the casing. In order to slidably mount the rods within thecasing sockets 7 are connected through the medium of suitable fastening devices 8 to the under surface of the top casing while cylinders 9 havetheir upper ends arranged in threaded engagement with the sockets 7. Washers 10 are-carried within the cylinders and serve to guide the reciprocatory movement of the rods 6 through the cylinders. A cap 11 having central aperture 12 therein for the rod, is removably, threaded on the lower end of each casing while a plunger head 13 is removably-connected as at, 14 to the lower threaded extremity of each'rod and is preferably provided with a leather face 15 for a purpose that will presently appear.
With a view toward providing the Iimupon the opposite upper and lower faces Y proved means for imparting a reciprocatory motion to the rods I have provided supporting bases 16 and rigidly connected them as at 17 to the upper surface of the bottom of the receptacle in spaced relation to each other. Standards 18 project from the bases and terminate at their upper ends in the bearings 19 in which are journaled the respective endsof a shaft 20. Cams 21 are carried in spaced relation Von the shaft 20 for a purpose that will presently appear. Other bases 22 are mounted in spaced relation to the bases 16 and are rigidly connected to the bottom of the casing. Standards `23 extend from the bases and also terminate in journals 24 in which are journaled the respective ends of another shaft 25. Yokes 26 have their shanks 27 rigidly connected to the shaft 25 as indicated by the numeral The arms of each yoke are arranged of the cams 21, the spaces' between the arms of the yokes however being slightly larger uthan the diameter of the cams for a purpose that will presently appear. Cups 29 are removably connected to the outer end of the upper arm of each yoke through the medium of screws 30 which removably engage the upper arms and pass therethrough being adjustably connected to wedges 31 which have their outer faces arranged on the lower surfaces of the upper arms so as to contact with the cams 21 and form a means for adjusting the relation between the arms of the yokes and the cams to consequently vary the position of the rods during their vertical reciprocatory movement .and vary the relation between the feet 5 of Vis mounted on the bottom of the casing and is operably connected with the cam -shaft 20 through the medium of a belt 35 which is operably connected to the motor and which is trained about the pulley wheel 36 carried by .one projecting end of the shaft 20.
The operation of this invention maybe yreviewed as follows: Y
Assuming that the parts have been as- 'sembled in the manner described, the motor 34 is started and imparts a rotary movement tothe shaft 2O `which carries the cams :21. Owing tothe shaft 25 and the bearings 24 'which' serve to' rockably support the yokes 26 4which yokes are in turn supported at their outer ends by the cams, during the `advantages of my invention.
rotation of the shaft 20 the yokes 26 will be rocked in a vertical position and consequently impart 'a reciprocatory movement to the rods 6 since the plunger heads 13 are supported by the yokes 26. The cushions 32 and the leather washer 33 as well as the leather faces of the piston head serve asa means for obviating noise during the actuation of these parts. Obviously this rocking movement causes the jointed figures to dance on the upper surface of the casing.-
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is j 1. A device of the character described including a casing, a plurality of jointed iigures, rods connected to the figures and slidably mounted in the top of the casing, a
plunger head on the lower end of each rod,
a rotatably mounted shaft7 cams carried. by the shaft, rockably mounted yokes in operable relation with the cams and arranged beneath the plunger heads for supporting the plunger heads, means adjustably connected to the yokes for varyingthe position of the rods during sliding movement to consequently vary the relation of the jointed figures with respect to the top of the casing, and means for rotating the shaft to assure of the actuation of the figure supporting rods.
2. A device of the character described including a casing, a plurality of jointedl figures, a plurality of rods slidably mounted in the top ofthe casing and each having i one of the gures connected thereto above the top of the casing, a plunger head carried `by the lower end of each rod, a shaft rotatably mounted in the casing, cams carried'by the shaft, another shaft mounted in the casing, yokes extending from the last mentioned shaft and having the arms thereto arranged upon the opposite upper and lower facesof the cams supported at their outer ends by the cams, cups carried by the `upper arms of the yokes, cushions carried in the cups and positioned to support the heads, means Vconnected to the Varms of the yokes and adjustable thereony for varying the position of the rods during sliding movement and for varying the relation between the jointed, iig- Aures andthe top ofthe casing,-and means "for actuating the rst mentioned shaft and consequently rock the shafts and reciprocate the figure supporting rods.
3, A device of the character described i11- cluding a easing, a plurality of jointed figures embodying a body, jointed arms and legs connected thereto, feet connected to the legs, a plurality of rods slidably mounted in the top of the casing and each having its upper end connected to the body of the adjacent figure, a plunger head mounted on the lower end of each rod, a rotatably mounted main shaft in the easing, a rockably mounted shaft, yokes extending therefrom and having the arms thereof arranged upon the opposite upper and lower faces of the cams and supported at their outer ends, body cams, cups arranged above the upper surface of the arms of the yokes7 cushions in the oups and engaged by the heads, wedges arlrangedupon the under surfaces of the upper arms of the yokes and engageable with the cams to vary the position of the rods during the sliding movement and to consequently Vary the relation between the feet of the 'jointed figures and the top of the casing, common means for fastening the cups to the arms and for adjustably connecting the wedges to the arms, and means for actuating the rotatable shaft to consequently actuate the figure supporting rods.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
