Description

UNITED STATES NELSON A. NEWTON, OF SOHOOLORAFT, MICHIGAN'.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SPRING SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,096, dated May 21, 1872.
' State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Spring Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description o f the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of referencey marked thereon.
This invention has for its object the produc tion of a simple device for preventing carriagesprings from being unduly strained laterally by the pitching forward or backward of the carriagebody; and consists mainly in the combination of a bracket or arm attachedr to the body of the carriage, with a hinged rod attached to the reach or axle, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing a side elevation of my improved device is represented. r
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.V
A represents a bracket, consisting of the stema and branching arms c c. The lower end of the stem a is loosely jointed to one end ofthe rod B, and the arms a c are securely iiXed in any proper manner to the carriagebody at about its center. The opposite end of the rod B is connected by a hinge-joint to the standard O, which is securely'attached either to the reach of the wagon or to one of the axles.
The operation of this device will be easily understood. The bracket A is free to move vertically with the movement of the carriagebody, such movement being permitted by the swinging of the rod B. The bracket is also free to adjust itself to the different inclines assumed by the carriage-body when one spring is depressed more than another, such adjustment being permitted by its jointed connection with the rod B; but while the vertical movement of thecarriage is permitted freely, its movelnent forward or backward, independent of the runnin ggear, is absolutely prevented by the rigidity of the rod B, so that it is impossible to strain the springs laterally by the pitching forward or backward of the carriagebodv.
The device is exceedingly simple, and can be produced at a small cost.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The device described, consisting of the bracket A, rod B, and standard C, constructed sub stantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 24th day of January, 1872.
