To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Gnonemzn Amman, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in dolls, the object of my invention being to provide a doll having all the appearances of an infant and being so constructed as to ha \e seemingly jointless arms, head and legs. In other words, my improved doll is constructed so as to provide movable arms, legs and head without resorting to mechanical joints, such as ball-and-socket connections, wires, etc. The joints of my impro 'ed doll, or rather the points of connection of the arms, legs and head to the body, are formed by a special means which obviates the necessity of mechanical expedients, therebyredueing the cost of manufacture to the extent that mechanical connections and handling of same are obviated. Other features and detail.) of improvement will hereinafter appear.v

I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail. the novel features of which I will point out in the appended claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawin s, forming part hereof, wherein igure 1 illustrates a front elevation of mg improved doll, the hands being broken Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional plan view, the section being taken on a line 22 in Fig. 1;

The body portion 7 of my improved doll. as well as the arms, feet and legs, is made up of a stuffed casing. preferably of fabric. to which the head 8 is movably atl ached. In this instance the casing is formed in four sections 9, 10, 11 and 12 stitched together. as at 13, 13". the seams formed by said stitching extending, at the sides of the figure, the entire length thereof, while the seams at the front and back of the body extend from the neck to the crotch. The lower edges of the sections 9, I 11 and 12 at the crotch 14 are stitched together, and the seams'15, at the inside of the legs, are also formed 1 y stitching the adjacent edges of the sections 9, 10, 11 and 12 together at this point.

By referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the seams 13 extend the entire length of the body 7 down the legs 16, and also along the undersurface of the arms 17, while the seams 13 extend from the neck portion 20 along the upper surface of the said arms 17.

It will be apparent from any inspection of the drawings, that the casing for the body portion of the doll is (in this instanet made up of four sections, each section being blanked out to conform to the shape of one quarter section of the body, said sections being properly placed together and stitched along adjacent or conforming edges.

One of the features of my invention is the manner of movably securing the head 8 to the body 7 without recourse to mechanical connections. The head 8 of the doll is pro vided with an outwardly flaring flange 18, having a rounded edge 19, over which a portion 20 of each section 9, 10, 11 and 12 of the body casing is placed and caused to snugly fit the same by means of drawing strings '21, Fig. 2. The flange 18 and casing of the body of the doll are kept firmly in contact by the stuffing or filling 22 which is prefer: ably cotton, although other filling material can be used. As the filling 22 is yieldable as well as the casing, the head 8 can be moved in any direction, including a rotary movement in a horizontal plane. The elements whioh'secure the head 8 in position are the filling 22 and easing of the body, no other means being employed.

The flexible connection between the body and the arms 17 and the body and legs 16 is accomplished by stitching the front and back members of the casing sections together, as at 23. By means of the stitching 23 the cas ing is divided into five pocke s, each of which are independently stuffed. The stitching 23 may be applied before the pockets are filled to round out the body, legs and arms. or after the said pockets are filled; in either event there will not be any filling at the points where said stitching 9.3 is applied. and hence these regions are more flexible than mechanical joints would be.

A further important feature of my invention is the formation of the feet 24. Each foot 24 is formed b extensions of the body sections 9, 12, 10 and 11 in combination with a supplemental section 25, as indicated at 9 and 12, Fig. 5. The section 25 is stitched to the extensions of the body sections, as at 13" and 13 (Fi 5). The heel portion of the foot and arch and toe portion, that is to say, that portion of the foot other than the heel, are independently stufl'ed or rather are stuffed with separate and distinct masses of filling. The purpose of this feature of my invention is to provide a foot having a projectin heel that will serve to retain a shoe or soc Without recourse to ribbons, cords or the like, as is usualliy the case with the By orming the foot as above described, it is possible to form a pocket to receive standing to form a pro ecting heel. When the bod section members 9, 12, 10 and 11 are blanked out, the lower on of each section will be formed to pro vide when the sup lemental section 25 is stitched thereto a ell-awn in portion 26 so that when the foot is stuffed the heel 0 an infant child will be simulated. Each arm 17 is provided with a hand 27 provided with an annular recess 28. The hands are connected to the arms by wires 29, said wires acting to force the fabric of the arms into the recess as shown in Fig. 3. To securely anchor the wires and also to firmly secure the fabric of the arms and hands together, the said wires 29 are lpassed or laced through perforations 30, sec wire 29 being laced through adjacent perforations 30 and the fabric of the arms, after which it is wrapped around the arm and finally twisted toget er at its ends 31.

10. A doll body provided with an arm, a hand for the arm having an annular recess and perforations, and a wire to hold the arm in said recess, the wire being laced through said rforations.
