pecification of Letters Patent. Pattgnted June 11, 191$ Application filed Deep miner 8, i915. serlallt'o. 65,755.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, ALPHA O. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluecreek, inthe county of Kanawha andv State of West Virginia, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Calipers, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my present invention is to provide a new and improved device which embodies the necessary requisites for ascertaining both the interior and exterior diameters of pipes and other similar articles so as to obviate the necessity of ,the operator changing from one device to another when eudeavoring to ascertain these measurements and to increase, to a material extent, the general utility of a device of this character.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved device of the type in question that is extremely simple in. construction, strong and durable, and highly practical from both the standpoint of the manufacturer and the standpoint of the user; and which, it is believed may be manufactured at a minimum cost. 7
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent during the continuance of the following description, therefore further detailed description is deemed unnecessary. These objects are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred form in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more specifically pointed out in the appended claim. In the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like parts throughout the several views;
Figure 1 is a View in front my improved device showing my device? as in its preferred embodiment and in a position for ascertaining the exterior diameter of a pipe or the like article.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig 3 is a view in rear elevation showing my device in a position to ascertain the interior diameter of a pipe or the like article.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 10 designates the body-portion-or dial of the device, which is to be provided with suitable graduationasuch as will be herein after pointed out. A suitably curved arm 11 is fixed to the body 10 at a certain point about its perimetral edge and bent to project elevatioii of therefrom in a plane corresponding with the plane of the general extent of the body portion. I employ a second arm 12 to act in conjunction with the arm 11 and provide the same with an enlargement 13 at one end to facilitate its connection with the body 10. The body 10 and the enlargement 13 of the arm 12are provided with registering openings which receive a suitable fastening member 14: or point. In order to obviate the displacement of the fastening member and at the same time provide for the efficient.
operation of the arm 12 I provide a plate 15 which receives one end of the fastening member as clearly shown in Fig. 2. In order to indicate the position of the arm 12 upon the body 10, by co-action with the graduat tions thereon, I provide the enlargement 13 of the arm 12 with a suitable lndicating finger 16. When the arms are in the position shown in Fig. 1, it is contemplated to have the finger 16 register with the zero mark of thegraduations so that when the arms 11 and 12 are moved in. order to engage with the exterior periphery of the article to be measured, the distance between the free ends of the arms will be indicated by the finger 16.
In order to render the device'applicable for use in ascertaining inside diameterof a pipe such as illustrated by the letter A in Fig. 3, the arm 12 may be moved entirely around the body 10 into the position shown in Fig. 3, or it may bemoved into such-position by springing the spherical ends of the respective arms 11 and 12 past one another and continuing to move the arms to the position shown. Whenin t is position move ment of the free ends of the arms will also be recorded by the indipator finger 16 in viewof thefact that the graduations to one side of the body 10 are for use in ascertaining the inside diameter while the graduations to the other side are only used when it is desired .to ascertain the outside diameter of an article.
The Zero graduation is located on the dial at a point exactly in alinement with the pivotal center of the arcuate dial, face and the contact face of the hemispheribal end of the arm 11, and the point of the indicating finger 16 is located between and exactly in alinement with its pivotal center and the contact face of the hemispherical end of the arm 12; so that when thesehemispherical ends are in contact with one another, the iii-- dictator finger 16 exactly raglan-21's with the, zero graduation of The (hall.
From the 'lforegoing; it will he npprechm-Ll that I have provided an exll'emely simple device which mnhwlies the Reece-wry z'equ'bsites for usceriuinlng the in 0 and outside diameters of an article. It 15; also believe; that the other advanlv and. novel Fellini? of my invention will readily mul and therefore ifl'n'ther detailed elesej'lp'lmu is deemed unnecessary.
