Description

R. D. KNIGHT.
MATCH RECEPTACLE. APPL'mATmN F1LED1uN21.1911.
l Patented 11111611, 1918.
l vApplieati'misita Ju'e 27, 191,7.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, `and `resident of the city of Providence, "in the county of Providence and State invented certain new following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in match receptacles, and has for its object to provide such a receptacle having a body to which a frame member is connected, said frame being arranged to engage the margin of a plate of friction material to bind it to the body and leave exposed its working face.
In match receptacles of this character it is of advantage to carry the so-called Safety-matches which will ignite only upon coming in sharp contact with a composition designed especially to coperate with the treated match head.
Such safety matches usually come in boxes formed of veneer and having one or more of its sides coated with such ignit: ing composition, but these boxes are too clumsy to be conveniently carried about in the pocket of the user.
An object of this invention is to provide a convenient and attractive receptacle of metal or other suitable material in which such matches may be carried, and to provide, on said receptacle, simple and effective means for receiving and removably securing the coated portion of this original match package for igniting the matches carried in this receptacle.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1- is a view showing a match box with a recess in its side, the lid of the box being in section and a portion of the retaining frame broken away.
Fig. 2- is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. l showing the friction plate as inserted in the recess in the side of the match box and retained therein by the frame member.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the frame member designed tooperate in the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a greatly enlarged central sectional elevation of the structure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

` Referring tothe drawings, 24- designates a' frame member whiohis provided with a narrow rim having a hollowicenter portion 30.l` A "recess 191s provided in the side of the boxofa width, length and depth to re- ,ceiYQ the friction plate 21, and I preferably cutaway the lip 22 at the upper edge 23 of the box, to a width substantially that of the recess 19.
The retaining frame 24- for this style of box is preferably hinged to the box at its lower end at 25 and its upper edge is provided with an inset flange or lip 26 adapted to register with the lip 22 on the box so that when the lid 27 is closed it engages this flange 26 and securely locks the frame in closed position over the friction plate.
In addition to this means for holding the frame closed, I also provide a catch 28, see Fig. 4f, which is adapted to snap over the edge 29 of the receptacle portion. thereby retaining the frame in closed position even when the lid 27 is open.
This frame has an open middle portion 30 leaving exposed the working face of the friction material 31.
By this construction it will be seen that i by making the frame 24 very thin it lies substantially flush with the side of the box, and in some cases if desired this frame itself may be set in shallow grooves in the side of the box so that its face will be quite Hush with that of the box.
The device is simple and ediective in construction and neat in appearance and by its use a plate of friction material such as that forming the side of the original match package may be readily secured to a match box of any desired design and removed and replaced by a fresh one as often as it may become worn.
I have illustrated and described an em bodiment of my invention but I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed they are used in a descriptive and generic sense and not for the purpose of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a match box having a recess in one side thereof, of an open frame pivoted to said side near the bottom and in a position to coincide with said recess, said frame and said recess being of less `width than the side, and relatively shaped to receive and clamp between them a" strip .of friction material, the upper end of the recessed portion i of, the I box* `and',` the F free s end of the frame having colnplernental means for maintaining the frame-in closed-f position.
` 2.` The combination with a match boxihav# a recess in `one side, the
ing a top flange and away opposite 1 shaped to: receiveganclclarnp between them astrip of friction nnateiv'ial7 the unper end of tleframe having a flange positioned to 15 fill the cut iavvay. portiontof the box ange,
a catch for holding said frame in closed poilsitionfand a cover hinged to the boX and shaped to inclose said flanges.
"In testimony whereof I aiiiX my lsignature 20 in presenceof. two witnesses.
