Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 11, 1918 Application filed August 5, 1916. Serial No. 113,368.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet Collecting, Associating, and Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention'is to provide novel means for associating extra sheets fed from different sources of sheet supply, such, for instance, as cover andinsert sheets, with a collected group of sheets fed from another source of supply, means preferably being employed for stitching the so associated sheets together and for folding the same.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying draw-v ings, in which Figures 1 and 1 represent, in longitudinal vertical section taken just inside the near side frame, so much of a sheet collecting, associating and folding machine as includes my invention,
Figs. 2 and 2 represent the same in longitudinal vertical central section,
Figs. 3 and 3 represent the geared connection between the several parts, and

1 designates a source of extra sheet supply, such, for instance, as an insert sheet supply. 2 designates a different source of extra sheet supply, such, for instance as a cover sheet supply.
These sources 1 and 2 are herein shown as feed tables, the table 1 being provided with. a movable sheet stop 3 and the table 2 with a movable sheet stop 4.
The rotary cutters 5, 6, mounted on suitable shafts 7, 8, are arranged to cut a single web or a plurality of superimposed Webs which pass between the rolls 9, 10, into sheets, which sheets are passed downwardly between guides 11, 12, and between the rotary coacting carriers 13, 14, mounted on shafts 15, 16, respectively. These carriers are arranged to collect the sheets in groups. In the present instance, the rotary carrier 14 is provided with a set of grippers 17 and the rotary carrier 13 is provided with a set of grippers 18. A rotary associating carrier 19 mounted on the shaft. 20 is herein shown as being provided with an odd number of sets of grippers 21, three for instance.
A rotary transfer carrier22 mounted on the shaft 23 is arranged to feed the extra sheets successively from the different sources of sheet supply 1 and 2 into position to be associated on the associating carrier 19 with a group of sheets fed from the rotary carrier -13. This rotary transfer carrier 22 isv shown as having an even number of sets of grippers 24, 25, two for instance, the said set of grippers 24 being arranged to take the sheets from the source of sheet supply land the grippers 25 being arranged to take the sheets from the source of sheet supply 2.

The train of gears,,designated-by 43.1 0 66 inclusive, is operativeto drive the parts at the proper relative speeds. In-the present instance, the rotary carriers 13 and 14 are run at the same surface speed; the carrier 1 19 at a slightly greater surface speed; and the carrier 22 at the same surface speed as the carrier 19.

A switch 67 is located at the entrance end of the stitcher table 26, which switch is operated from a cam 68 on the shaft 32 of the rotary carrier 80, through the connection 69.
A movable cam 70, for opening the grippers 21 at the proper intervals tolreceive the sheet fed from the extra source of sheet supply 1, is controlled by a cam 71 on the sheets onto the stitcher table 26, is controlled by a cam 74 on the shaft 15 of the rotary carrier 13 through the connection 75.
Coacting folding mechanlsm on the carriers 30 and 31 is of the well known floating blade andjaw type, in which the cam 76 controls the blade 35 and the cams 77, 78", and79,control the folding jaws 36.
The grippers are opened to release the associated sheets atthe time of folding, by the stationary cam 80.
A fixed cam-81 controls the grippers 17 of the: rotary carrier 14 and fixed cams 82, 83, control the grippers 18 at the points where they receive'the group ofsheets from the rotary carrier 13 and transfer the same to the rotary carrier 19, respectively.
Afi xed cam 84 controls the grippers 21 at the point where they receive the group of sheets-from the carrier 13.
The grippers 24 of the rotary carrier 22 are tumbler operated, their tumbler 85 beingcontrolled by the pins 80, 87. The grippers 25 onthe rotary carrier 22 are also tumbler operated, their tumbler 88 being controlled by the pins 89, 90.
The movement of'the sheet stop 3 is controlled-by the cam 91 arranged to engage the sh'eet stop roller 92. The movement of the sheet stop 4 is controlled by the cam 93 arranged to engage the sheet stop roller 94. The movement of the sheet stop 29 is controlled by the cam 95 which is arranged to engagethe sheet stop roller 96. A fixed cam 97 opens the grippers 24 to permit the sheets fed from the extra source of sheet supply 1 to be fed to-the grippers 21 of the associating carrier 19. A- fixed cam 98 opens the grippers 25 to release the sheets fed from the extra source of sheet supply 2 for association With the group of sheets and the extra sheet fed from the source 1.
The grippers 34 of the rotary carrier 30 are tumbler operated, their tumbler 102 being'controlled by pins 103, 104.
Positively driven rollers 99, 100, bear against the" surface of the rotary carrier 19 to hold the sheets in register thereon when the grippers are open and a positively driven roller 101 engages the surface of the rotary carrier 22 to hold the sheets in registertliereon when their grippers-are open.
The mechanism is herein shown as arranged for association with a group of sheet's'of an insert sheet fed from the source of sheet supply 1 and a cover sheet fed from the'different source of sheet supply 2, withthe insert on one side of the'group of sheets and the cover on the other side thereof.
The rolls 9, 10, may feed one or more webs to the rotary cutters 5, 6, where the sheets are severed from the web or webs and fed through the guides, 11, 12, to the sheet collecting carriers 13, 14. These carriers are, in the present instance, arranged to collect two sheets or two groups of superimposed sheets, according to Whether one or more webs be handled and feed the same to the sheet associating carrier 19 on top of an insert sheet.
The rotary carrier 22 is arranged to take an insertsheet from thesource of supply 1 and feed it to the associating carrier 19. This rotary carrier is arranged to take a cover sheet from the source of sheet supply and feed it into. position to be associated with the insert sheet and group of sheets, on top of the group of sheets. These associated sheets are then fed forwardly onto the stitcher table 26, the switch 67 being thrown into position to insure the passage of the insert sheet with the other sheetsonto thesaid table.-
When these associated sheets reach the stop'29, the sheets are stitched transversely of their travel. The stop is then raised and the advance edges of the sheets are grasped by the set of grippers 34 on the rotary sheet carrier 30. The associated stitched sheets are then folded offalong their stitched line transverse of their travel onto:the rotary sheetcarrier 31 and are delivered therefrom to the delivery mechanism 41, 42.
It is obvious that the rotary sheet carriers l3, 14,can handle single sheets or a plurality of superimposed sheets fed from the rotary cutters 5, G, and it is also obvious that the rotary sheet carrier 22 can feed one sheet or a plurality of superimposed sheets from each of the different sources of sheet supply 1 and 2 without departing from the spirit and scope of my inventlon.
It is evident that changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
What I- claim is:
1. Means for collecting a group of sheets, means for associating extra sheets fed from different sources with said group of sheets and a common means for feeding the extra sheets successively to the associating means.
2. Meansfor collecting agroup of sheets, means for associating extra sheets fed from different sources with said group of sheets, a common means for feeding the extra sheets successively to the associating means, and means for stitching the so associated sheets together" and delivering the same.
3. Means for collecting a group of sheets, means for associating extra sheets fed from different sources with said group ofsheets, a common means for feeding the extra sheets successively to the associating means, and means for folding the so associated sheets together and delivering the same.
4. Means for collecting a group of sheets, means for associating extra sheets fed from difierent sources with said group of sheets, a common means for feeding the extra sheets successively to the associating means, and means for stitching and folding the so associated sheets together, and deliveringthe same.

A source of main sheet supply, different sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary sheet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and for feeding the group to the associating carrier, and a common means arranged to take the extra sheets successively from the different sources of extra sheet supply and transfer them successively to the associating carrier to be combined with said group of sheets.

A source of main sheet supply, different sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary sheet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and for feeding the group to the associating carrier, a common means arranged to take the extra sheets successively from the different sources of extra sheet supply and transfer them succes- Jo sively to the associating carrier to be com bined with said group of sheets, and means for stitching the so associated sheets together and delivering the same.

A source of main sheet supply, different sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary sheet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and for feeding the group to the associating carrier, a common means arranged to" take the extra sheets successively from the different sources of extra sheet supply andtransfer them successively tothe associating carrier to be combined with said group of sheets, and means for folding the so associated sheets together and delivering the same.

A source of main sheet supply, different sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary' slreet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and for feeding the group to the associating car rier, a common means arranged to take the extra sheets successively from the different sources of extra sheet supply and transfer them successively to the associating carrier to be combined with said group of sheets, and means for stitching and folding the so associated sheets together and delivering the same.

A source of main sheet supply, difierent' sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary sheet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and feeding the group ofsheets to the associating carrier, and a single rotary carrier arranged to take the extra sheets successively from the different sources of extra sheet supply and transfer them successively to the associating carrier to be combined with the said group of sheets.

A source of main sheet supply, different sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary sheet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and feeding the group of sheets to the associating carrier, a single rotary carrier arranged to take the extra sheets successively from the different sources of extra sheet supply and transfer them successively to the associating carrier to be combined With the said group of sheets, and means for stitching the so associated sheets together and delivering the same.

A source of main sheet supply, different sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary sheet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and feeding the group of sheets to the associating carrier, at single rotary carrier arranged to take the extra sheets successively from the different sources of extra sheet supply and transfer them successively to the associating carrier to be combined with the said group of sheets, and meansfor folding the so associated sheets together and delivering the same.

A source of main sheet supply, different sources of extra sheet supply, a rotary sheet associating carrier, means for collecting a group of main sheets and feeding the group of sheets to the associating carrler, a single rotary carrier arranged to take the extra sheets successively from the difierent sources of extra sheet supply and transfer them successively to the associating carrier to be combined With the said group of sheets, and means for stitching and folding the so associated sheets together and delivering the same.
