Description
R. 1. HARDING. TOOL HOLDER FOR CAPSTAN AND THE LIKE LATHES.
Patented June 11, 1918.
APPLICATWN FILED OCT. 9, 19l6- bk I Ag ROBERT JAMES HARDING, or LAMBETH, LONDONLENGLAND.
TOOL-HOLDER FOR CAPS'IAN AND THE LIKE :t'nrnns,
Application filed November 9, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT JAMns HA RD- ING, works manager, a subject of the King of'Great Britain, residing at Burrup Place, Doris street, Lambeth, London, S. E., En land, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders for Capstan and the like Lathes; and I do hereby de clare the following to be a full, exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tool holders for capstan and the like lathes, and conslstsessentially in the hereinafter descrlbed con struction of tool post, and combination and arrangement therewith of the various parts for the setting and adjustment of the tools, whereby accuracy and ease in these operations are obtained, and a quick release of the tool post in its slide is possible so that 1ts position relative to the work may be var ed with facility without disturbing the setting of the tools in the holder.
The tool holder, in accordance with this invention, is constructed to hold two tools either of which is made use of as required. The tools are much closer together than in other holders and I provide means whereby each tool rest is capable of being tilted to a certain extent at either end, and set at the desired rake whereby slightly varying diameters of work may be operated upon by either tool.
And in order that my invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings and letters and figures of reference marked thereon, that is to say Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and side elevational views of the device constructed in accordance with this invention, certain parts being broken away and others shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan on the line H, Fig.1. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures where occurring.
In carrying my invention into effect I make the tool post a in the form of a frame in which the tools 6 are mounted independently of each other and close together. The base of the tool post a is tonguecl' (see particularly a Fig. 2) and works in a correspondingly shaped groove in the bed of the Specification of Letters Patent.

machine (not'shown) so as to be capable of a sliding traverse across the machine.
The tool rests d are supported upon-the heads of screws 0 which screw into the block f mounted within the lower part of the opening in the tool post a. One ofthese screws 6 is provided for the support of each end of each tool rest and according to the relative heights to which these screws 6 are adjusted So may each tool be set-either perfectly horizontal -or downwardrake as'may be required. Set screws it passing through the upper part of the tool post a serve to securely hold each its respective tool rest cl. it are packing pieces interposed between the ends of the screws h and the upper surface of the tools 6.
A pin or bolt 9 passes through the above mentioned block 7 to support same in the tool post and takes its bearings at each end in the sides of the frames a. The ends of this pin or bolt 9 are concentric but its center part 9 is made eccentric for the purpose hereinafter explained.
The under side of the said block 7 is bored out centrally to a required depth to accommodate a spiral spring j the free end of which rests upon the upper surface of the bottom bar of the frame forming the tool post a.
The spring j is intended to keep the tools in position as originally set When the eccentric portion of the pin 9 is in its inoperative position and the screws it are slackened off as the spring will then elongate.
y giving a part turn to the pin 9 (the head of which is shaped to allow of the use of a turn screw, spanner or the like) the action of its eccentric portion tends to secure the tool post in its required position in the T slot of the machine bed.
At the same time, byreason of the tongued part c of the tool post a fitting in a groove in the bed of the machine as aforesaid, the pressure exerted as above expressed tends to hold the tool post more rigidly and firmly to the machine, and the tool post thus being first secured in the T slot, makes it possible to set the tools in a rigid tool post, which is a very great advantage.
When at any time it is desired to shift the position of the toolholder across the machine to which it is clamped in the aforesaid manner it is only necessary to' slightly slacken the top screws h and give a part turn with an upward or I to the screw 9 in the reverse direction to that previously given to bring its eccentric portion into action, when the tool post may be slid along the groove to its required position without any disturbance to or disarrangement of, the adjusted tools.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. The combination with a lathe bed of a tool holder including a post adjustably mounted on the bed, a tool supporting block loosely carriedby the post for movement toward and away from the bed, a tool sup porting member adjustably carried by the block, means carried by the post for clamping a tool to said adjustable supporting member and means for moving the block to hold the post against movement with respect to the bed, said means comprising a shaft journaled in the post and including an eccentric portion engageable with the block to clampingly hold said block against the lathe bed.
Copies oi this patent may be obtained for five cent 2. The combination with a lathe bed of a tool holder including a post adjustably 25 mounted on the bed, a tool supporting block loosely carried by the post for movement toward and away from the bed, a tool supporting member adjustably carried by the block, means carried by the post for clamping a tool to said adjustable supporting member, means for moving the block to hold the post against movement with respect to the bed and a spring disposed between the post and block to urge said block and its tool supporting means toward the tool clamping means of the post.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT JAMES HARDING.
